Why would an Atheist celebrate Advent?

Advent is the celebration of the coming of the birth of our Savior. I have a friend on Facebook who yearly does an Advent wreath but is staunchly Atheist. What do you think he's actually celebrating? Do you have any non-Christian friends who like to have the tradition of the Advent wreath/candles?

have you ever asked him why he celebrates, or recognizes, it? His answer might be interesting,

FWIW, It is not at all uncommon for non Christians. Agnostics, or Atheist's to celebrate Christmas, it being a cultural rather than religious sort of thing.

Is there any reason he shouldn't enjoy some festive lights?

Given how many other festivals are around the same time, and the ongoing question of whether December 25 actually has anything to do with the birth date of Jesus Christ, and the silence of Scripture regarding any requirement to commemorate the day of Christ's birth, why would it bother us if someone who doesn't share our faith wants to light some candles or hang a wreath? We might as well ask why people who don't follow Jesus celebrate Christmas and Easter at all.

I can't remember if I've asked him in the past. We've been friends since high school, so it's been a long time. I'm not asking about Christmas, but about Advent.

I'm not asking about Christmas, but about Advent. Why would someone who hates Christianity want to celebrate Advent? Advent hasn't become commercialized yet.

How did we get from "atheist" to "hates Christianity"? Someone can doubt that God exists without hating Christianity.

Whether we're talking about Christmas or Advent, does it really matter? Advent calendars are popular even if not as loaded with marketing as Christmas. Many people enjoy having a few lights around to brighten up the darkness. They can borrow from Christian themes without being accused of cultural appropriation, unlike a festival such as Diwali.

My wife doesn't like the dark evenings this time of year very much. Right now in our living room we have a Christmas tree (lit up), a small ceramic Christmas tree (lit up), and a Father Christmas figure with a battery powered candle inside that lights up in the evening. Does being a Christian mean she shouldn't celebrate the rather secular figure of Father Christmas?

As to why your friend in particular does it, you'd have to ask him. I'm not sure why it's even noteworthy - it seems no different to people wearing a cross on a chain because it's a cool piece of jewelry rather than because they regard the cross as having any significance to their lives.

I don't even know why this person would know about advent. Maybe it is something that was important to him or her in childhood or reminds them of someone?

That's kind of my thought...as if the memories were fond so he doesn't let it go.

I think some folks still value tradition even if they have abandoned the cause of that tradition

I also think more people are realising that a life without moral or ethical limits wasn't all it's cracked up to be, and are turning to timeless traditions that aren't changing constantly in a society in perpetual flux.

That could be. They do this yearly, so tradition is something they hold onto even though they deny the Savior born for them.
