My husband and I were waiting to enter a popular local attraction, and next to us was a mom in her thirties with her two children, a boy and girl. The boy was probably around the age of 9 I'd say.

We heard the mom say loudly, "Don't look at my phone. I've caught you doing this a lot lately and you need to mind your business. It's a habit lately that I'll break you of and you need to just mind your own business."

My first thoughts were, what was she hiding from her own child?

What are your thoughts on what the mom said to the boy? Did he deserve such a reprimand?

OH and I heard a few minutes after that the boy announcing the time because he saw it elsewhere and that's why he was looking on his mom's phone. He was wondering how many minutes left we had to wait outside before the place opened up.

Is it so inappropriate for a parent to not want their child to see everything on their phone?

Sometimes I exchange memes with friends that wouldn't be appropriate for a 9-year-old. Some people may have personal information that a 9-year-old might not understand is confidential on their phone.

Maybe there are better ways of telling the child to leave her phone alone but I'm not sure a desire for a bit of privacy is unwarranted.

Many kids like electronics so they are naturally going to be drawn to games and stuff on devices. She should get him a tablet or something to play with so he won't be looking at her device.

Or maybe she should encourage him to live in the real world rather than joining the growing ranks of teenagers (and increasingly pre-teenagers) who appear unable to function without a screen in front of them.
