When I was young I used to read a whole lot of fantasy books - lots by Piers Anthony. As an adult I enjoyed books with the same theme - for example, The Wheel of Time series.

I enjoy this genre if it's well written and has good character development while also being interesting. I also like it because it's upfront about what it is: fantasy. It doesn't pretend to be real. One can immerse themself in it knowing it's the product of someone's imagination, and could even be possible perhaps if God made another universe where it could occur.

I do not like Historical Fiction - which is what I consider a great deal of American / Western Entertainment - especially in the Film arena. A lot of Film but when it comes in book form I am not interested either. Difference here is - this type of entertainment usually presents itself as real or mostly real in order to foster various agendas, covertly.

I also like reading about History - but I distrust much of what I was formerly taught, because of all the lies I discovered in it. On the subject of History, at least history that is believable to me, I recently finished:

The Conquest of the World by the Jews: originally written by a Major Osman Bey in French which curiously mostly disappeared and has recently resurfaced. There is an English version now. From memory it is well over 100 years old.

I like fantasy, on the basis it's in a fictional world and makes no pretense to represent anything real. The land doesn't exist, the people don't exist, whatever magic holds it all together doesn't exist and the monsters don't exist. Usually I read fantasy as little more than brain candy so as long as there aren't gaping plot holes I'm usually OK with it. I like a style of writing that gives me something to use to build my own picture of what this mythical world might look like - I want to be able to see the dragons, the heroes, the castles etc in my mind.

Things like technical reference manuals are a bit dull by comparison.

Books about real life. Real people. Fiction does nothing for me. If some read fiction as a method of escape from the real world, when you finish, you are still in the real world. How depressing.

I love history, but real history. Not made up history to fit ones agenda. I hate those who manipulate history for their own ends. And I hate those who believe made up history because it fits what they want to hear.

As a Christian, of course I love theological books on the many many subjects found in the Bible. I love the history found in the Bible, before and after the Church. I love biographies about the Christian missionaries. Very inspiring but can be very sad also.

It has been my experience, that reading true history is much more exciting than any fiction story. It has much more drama, life and death decisions, sorrow and rejoicing, victory and tragedy, love and hate. And it really happened.

Even as a youth, I loved history over fiction. I read some fiction as required in school. And some was very good. But as a youth, I didn't yet have knowledge of the real world. And I always desired the real over the fantasy.

I tend to change genre of books from fiction, mysteries, thrillers, history, Christian non fiction and mental health field related books. I would get bored if I just read one type of genre. Also I read the Bible everyday. I have bought a lot of books at the used bookstore in town this year. In fact, I got 9 free books this morning from there.
They have these large containers at the front of the store where they have free books that they did not accept for sale for one reason or another. I have found some gems in there.
