Snakes are something I have always had a fear of. I found out just last year that one of my neighbours a few doors down has a pet snake, they keep it secure in their home in a tank and will only take it out when needed so that is not a big issue for anyone. I couldn't keep a pet snake myself.

Would you keep a snake as a pet?

I wouldn't buy a snake myself, but if a friend wanted me to watch theirs for a few days or a while I would.

I had a pet snake for nearly 20 years. I got her as a hatchling and kept her until she developed a heart condition common to snakes and the vet said the best thing to do was to put her out of her misery. Because of the way snake anatomy is laid out in a long line an enlarged heart prevents a snake from eating. It still gets hungry so it tries to eat, but the prey can't get past the enlarged heart and so it has to regurgitate the food.

I have a snake outside right now that I'll call my pet LOL And I don't have to personally feed it or anything. I first saw it in the bushes...like on top of the bushes sunning itself. Then the next day I saw it out by the generator as I was weeding. I'll just let it eat the voles so they don't destroy my outside plants and we'll all be happy.

I don't want one in the house though. I just don't want to take care of anything right now.

We have a cat that explores our back yard. Normally I'd chase it away but since it has been visiting us we haven't seen any voles, so I let it be. If it can eat the voles and save me putting poison down that's a good thing. I'd rather not poison the voles in case the local birds of prey eat a poisoned vole, but I don't want them eating my plants. Natural predators are a good way to handle problem species :)
