I always thought being in prison was some kind of punishment.

Jesus often went into the wilderness. I'm not an expert on the Qu'ran by any means but I suspect Muhammed may have done the same. Maybe inmates should have the right to go into the wilderness whenever they want too?

Viewing an eclipse is not a necessity to life, so no, they don't have that "right". It's a want, not a need.

Lawyers for the six men incarcerated at the Woodbourne Correctional Facility in upstate New York said Thursday that they've reached a settlement with the state that will allow the men to view the solar eclipse "in accordance with their sincerely held religious beliefs.”

It was not an eclipse when Jesus was on the cross. Luke 23:44 says that it was dark from the sixth hour to the Ninth hour. Eclipses don't last three hours.
