Hours after Kensington Palace released a new portrait of the Princess of Wales for Mother’s Day—the first official picture of the royal since she underwent abdominal surgery earlier this year—major news agencies have retracted the image amid allegations of image manipulation.

Associated Press, Agence France-Presse, and Reuters have all pulled distribution of the portrait from their clients. A kill notification released by AP explains the decision: “At closer inspection it appears that the source has manipulated the image. No replacement photo will be sent.”

IMO, this only adds to increased speculation that they may be hiding something. Better if they hadn’t issued it.

I think the Princess has a difficult time when she's so heavily in the spotlight. She likes to do photography and edit her work, and so what? It's a little off, but then again, so is most of what we see from magazines!

I think the problem isn't so much that she fiddled with her photo but that after so much time out of the spotlight it invited further speculation as to what's really going on with her and her health. One wonders why she didn't just release the original photo rather than fiddle with it in a dozen ways that are readily apparent and then hide behind a rather vague comment.

It can be hard to balance a desire for at least some privacy with being part of one of the highest profile families in the world. People who were born into a famous family never got a lot of choice but it's not like Kate didn't know the guy she was marrying would almost certainly become the King of England.

Who cares if it was edited. Who cares if she isn't wearing her rings. There could be several reasons for that.

There could. And that's the point.

She might not be wearing her rings because she was playing with the kids and forgot to put them back on. She might not be wearing her rings because she and William are having serious marital problems.

She might have edited the photo because she's recovering from surgery and fiddling with Photoshop as a way to pass the time. She might have edited the photos to gloss over some serious complications. She might have had someone edit the picture to change it completely.

The problem is when a picture is released that was clearly edited, and then pulled from circulation by major news outlets, it invites speculation as to why it was edited. If you or I released a picture that we'd edited the chances are nobody would care overly much, except maybe some internet warriors might spot it and comment. But you and I aren't married to the heir to the British throne. That makes a difference.
