University staff have been advised not to address their classes as “ladies and gentlemen” in case it offends non-binary students.

Academics attending an event at the University of Westminster’s Centre for Social Justice Research were advised to avoid using “unnecessarily gendered language” and against “dividing students into groups by their perceived genders”.

The Non-Binary in Higher Education report, a 37-page document launched at the University of Westminster on February 29, said that staff should announce their own pronouns when introducing themselves and “look up students’ pronouns and chosen names on the student information system in advance of class or meetings”.

Is this Country going totally insane? Claiming to be non-binary or transgender is a personal psychological perception that might comfort some individuals but is not generally obvious or physically demonstrable. If folks want a different identity recognized, wear a sign.

What's your opinion on this?

Hey, if there's any spare time after figuring out the person who looks like one thing prefers to be called something else maybe the professors might even teach the students something. Although maybe that's not the point of university any more, it's sometimes hard to say.

School promptly fires educator because someone identifying as a cat became offended.
