Amazon-owned Ring will stop allowing police departments to request doorbell camera footage from users, marking an end to a feature that has drawn criticism from privacy advocates.

In a blog post on Wednesday, Ring said it will sunset the “Request for Assistance” tool, which allows police departments and other public safety agencies to request and receive video captured by the doorbell cameras through Ring’s Neighbors app.

Do you have a Ring doorbell camera?

Have the police ever asked to see footage from it?

We have a camera at our front door mainly to deter anyone stealing packages off the front porch. It is not from that company and I don't honestly think it has that feature, but I could be wrong.

I don't want video of my property being stored in some central location by a faceless corporation that has no accountability regarding what it does with my data. So.... no.

I at the moment do not have a ring doorbell camera but I do have a blink mini camera in my front window which I purchased after an issue that resulted in my front door window being broken.

I would like to get a ring doorbell but will be honest, it is more for my and my family's safety but I would not be hesitant to give footage to the police if it meant it helped a neighbour after a crime.

I would most likely give video to the police if it helped a neighbor track down someone responsible for a crime against them. For me the issue isn't whether I'd give the footage to the police but whether the police have a right to the footage regardless of my consent.

When the police can more or less take whatever video feeds they want from whatever source they want, society starts to look more and more like something the Stasi would be proud of.
