It's a symbolic ritual, the purification and Mary and Joseph were poor, so they could not afford a lamb and offered up 2 birds instead. They were following what the Lord commanded to Moses when Israel was in Exodus.
Luke 2:22-24 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord
Exodus 13:1-2 The Lord said to Moses, “Consecrate to me every firstborn male. The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.”
Why does your (Luke 2:22) say "their purification" when it was for Mary?

Joseph became unclean when he touched Mary while she was bleeding, so both needed to be purified according to the ceremonial laws.
What is this based on?

Well, the other reason for the word "their" could be speaking of both Mary and baby Jesus.
But what would be the basis for that?
The 'law of the purification' for motherhood is based upon (Lev. 12:1-8). And it constantly refers to the mother. She and her.

Purification is listed in Leviticus for all the things that people do and need to go make a sacrifice...bleeding, giving childbirth (which has blood), touching someone who is unclean because they're bleeding, etc... The "their" could refer to just Mary and Jesus, or it could refer to Mary and Joseph and Jesus. The text doesn't say, and it really doesn't matter, does it? They abided by what the law told them to do.
