I think the worst service I received was at a hotel restaurant in Washington DC. The waitress couldn't have been less interested in serving my wife and I - she practically dumped our food in our laps and was gone before we had chance to ask for something else. She wasn't around to refill glasses and basically did nothing. When the check came I tipped her a dime. My wife didn't think she deserved that. I didn't either but didn't have anything smaller - my intention was to make it clear that I didn't forget to tip her, the dime was what her service was worth.

One place managed to beat that level of service, although it was the service we never received. We'd gone for a double-date with a couple of friends. We had a miscommunication and they arrived 15 minutes before the time we thought we'd agreed. When we arrived they were waiting at a table with a glass of water and nothing else. We joined them and waited, and waited, and waited. Nobody greeted us, nobody offered us a drink, a waitress serving the adjacent table completely ignored us, and there was no sign of a hostess. The place wasn't even busy - there were maybe two tables being used apart from ours. We considered trying to flag someone down to get us menus and maybe get us a drink but figured if our friends had been ignored for so long we didn't want to place an order if it was going to take an hour or more to arrive. After 15 more minutes we got up and left. The owner appeared unhappy at the 1-star review I left them and asked me to reach out to him privately, and then never replied.

In Spain as a kid. The place was packed, so no wonder they couldn't help us, but I remember that my dad was fed up after half an hour or more being ignored LOL and then we all had to leave.

One other place that gave appalling service but subsequently made amends.

A pub a couple of miles from where I lived at the time. Nice riverside location, it looked like a nice place to eat. So we went in, found a table (they were quite busy), sat down and waited. And waited, and waited, and waited some more. After about 20 minutes we left, and I sent the pub a somewhat snarky email about how pleased I was that my experiments on a secret invisibility potion were finally beginning to work.

I got a very apologetic email back offering us lunch on the house if we would give them another chance. So we did, we enjoyed lunch on the house (and they threw in dessert, which wasn't part of the original promise), and it was very good. It became one of our favorite places to go, until we moved out of the area.
