CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A bill that would have prohibited minors from getting married in West Virginia was defeated Wednesday night in a legislative committee.

Currently, children can marry as young as 16 in West Virginia with parental consent. Anyone younger than that also must get a judge’s waiver.

The bill would have established that 18 is the age of consent and removed the ability of a minor to obtain consent through their parents, legal guardians, or by court petition.

Do you think getting married under the age of 18 should not be allowed? (Why/Why not?)

The brain isn't fully developed until the age of 25. When I was 17, I thought I wanted to be married...right then!! That would have been a stupid judgment call since my education hadn't been completed. I'm glad I waited until I was 23 after I finished my schooling, bought my first car and could afford a home with my husband.

The old laws were in place from when people died young and boys needed to be birthed to help the family out. We don't need those archaic laws anymore.

Yes. Not with some old creep, but some 16 year olds are mature. Saw a 16 y o boy who wanted to marry and take care of his kid. In the Bible it was normal. Why force em to live in sin because they're young? She was already pregnant anyway.

This is the sort of thing where "age of consent" laws end up creating all sorts of stupid situations.

The US has such an obsession with people drinking before they are 21, and yet allows people to get married at 18, join the armed forces at 18 and so on. So you're responsible enough to lay down your life for your country but not responsible enough to drink a beer. You can commit the rest of your life to someone but not have a glass of wine to toast your own marriage.

What's really bizarre is where concepts like "age of consent" and "child pornography" collide. A man can meet a 16-year-old girl in a club, take her home and enjoy the pleasures of her company in any way he chooses. With her parents' consent he can marry her and she can bear his children. Yet if he takes a picture of her with a single nipple showing, that image is child pornography and he becomes a child sex offender.

If someone is legally an adult at 18 they should be allowed to get married. As to what, if any, age is appropriate under 18 that seems like something that parents know better than politicians. Some people are mature at 16. Others are still overgrown children at 28.
