OTTAWA — In the heavily conservative western prairie province of Alberta, Canada, many residents, especially those on the far right, chafed at the Covid-19 restrictions imposed by the Liberal federal government in Ottawa, the country’s capital.

The widespread resentment helped fuel the enormous truck blockade this year that disrupted trade with the United States and paralyzed Ottawa for a month.

Now, oil-rich Alberta has ratcheted up the long-running schism between western and eastern Canada by approving a bill allowing the province to ignore any federal laws and regulations it opposes, a move some critics described as an unconstitutional threat to the basic fabric of the country’s government.

What are your thoughts about this?

It goes against scripture (Romans 11). But any revolution is easily blamed on John Calvin. Through his doctrine of the "lesser magistrate".

If you push people sooner or later they push back. It's probably long overdue that federal overreach was addressed.

I'm not Canadian so my opinion probably doesn't matter.

Plus I'm entirely ignorant of Canadian Constitutional Law and the legal relation between provincial and federal government in that foreign country. But I tend to like Canadians.... they are polite, and I've always been impressed by how clean things are in Canada. And they have high speed limited on their freeways (often 100, even 120!). It's cold, though.

Aren't those speed limits in km/h though? When I last visited Canada (a fair few years ago now) I remember tweaking my GPS to measure in metric. 100km/h is only 62mph.

Still, it beats the rather silly insistence on 55mph limits across much of the US. It's hard to see how a four-lane expressway needs the same limit as a two-lane road that is used by old people and Amish buggies.
