Does the existence of the universe have a purpose, or have meaning? Why do we have sentience? Is our purpose just to eat, reproduce, and die? Should we express gratitude for our existence and ability to comprehend the wonder of the universe? How should we direct our expression of this gratitude? These are basic philosophical questions that are not answered by science. Can you answer?

Paul teaches that God created the universe and all that is therein to make His glory known. Apart from sin, there is no mercy, wrath, sovereignty, love, justice, and so on. We display God's attributes to the heavenly created order in all of this.

The answers to the question would depend on whether you're wanting a Scriptural answer or looking to initiate a more general philosophical discussion from other perspectives.

Yes it does have purpose and meaning. We have sentience because God does. We feel becaue he feels.

We who are believers certainly should express gratitude for our existence, for we are children of God. The unbeliever certainly will not as he will depend only on his ability to understand the universe. As though that were possible. In other words, science can't answer these questions.

My belief is even in science Stephen Hawking said before the big bang singularity there was nothing - there was nothing in this universe only darkness and God wanted to bring light and matter into that darkness.

God has sentience - part of his essence is in the living beings of his creations.

My personal belief we are here for judgment. Being placed here on Earth, made of the things of Earth, nourishment is necessary. For all spirits to be born in the flesh in a continuous uninterrupted fashion reproduction is necessary and to prevent overcrowding earthly death of the flesh is necessary -

Expressing gratitude is an individual choice and how or to whom the gratitude is expressed. One believes in God and express gratitude to him or one don't.

From the scientific point of view it was all a big accident.
