I’m looking for possibly buying a new Bible. I currently use the NIV most often.Which translation(or are they paraphrases?) is best….NIV, NLT, CSB or ESV?
I want as good of a translation, not paraphrase, as posssible, with it being true to English, easy to understand.

KJV is the best. It is true to the English. It is not hard to understand.

Before you answer the way I know you will, consider this. The KJV is under attack constantly. Why do you think that is? Perhaps it is because Satan wants to replace it with other translations of his choice. He wouldn't do that...would he?

So, go ahead and go for the 'most popular' translation. One that is 'easy to understand'. Then ask yourself also...woud Satan make it 'easy to understand'? Only if he wanted you to bite.

ESV and CSB out of those options based on what you are requesting.

All four are translations of the Hebrew and Greek texts.

It really depends on which translation method is being used.

Formal-equivalence translations attempt to translate each word in the original language into an equivalent English word.
Dynamic-equivalence translations attempt to translate the meaning of the original-language texts into an equivalent English word or expression.

The fact is no translation is wholly or the other.

You laugh because you can do nothing else. You have nothing to offer. So, laugh away as I wait for something of substance.

Speaking of substance, you repeatedly use these forums to stir things up. Nothing more. I want some genuine help here since I’m going to be investing in another Bible, none of which are cheap. Im going to stop responding to your posts.

No you don't. You want somebody to approve of what you already want to do. You ask only to salve your conscience. Make you feel good about what you know you want to do.

So, do you feel good now? Conscience clean? Buy whatever Bible you want. I don't care. You asked, I gave my opinion. You don't like it. OK.

Those are mostly more than I want to spend, plus, to be honest, the covers aren’t as pretty as what I’ve already been talking about.

Nothing per se, but you asked for one that was truest to the English, the NLT is a dynamic equivalent, so it is not as literal as the ESV or CSB. IMO there is a reason the ESV is one of the most popular versions used by Protestant pastors.

One of the reviews of one of this company’s Bibles said her Bible came with The Sinners Prayer. I don’t know if the one I like includes that or not. From what I can tell, this prayer is not part of the Bible and isn’t inspired, should I not order from them? It’s a company called Hosanna Revival

Lutherans don't believe in the Sinners Prayer because it leans toward decision theology. In other words, it's not theologically correct. So I'd avoid that.

I emailed them and asked if it’s glued to or part of their Bibles. We’ll see what they say.

What, if anything is wrong with the NLT?

A lot will depend on exactly what you want. My understanding, which is at least somewhat backed by experience of reading the English (I'm not familiar enough with Greek or Hebrew to determine for myself which translation is the most accurate) is that the NLT tends to be worded in more of an easy-reading manner. It's not a paraphrase the same way that The Message is but it feels like it's written to be easy to read even if that means it's not as strictly accurate as it might be.

I suppose one way to think about it is when a film is dubbed into another language. It's often considered better to choose words in the target language that most closely match the mouth movements of the original language even if that means a modest sacrifice in the accuracy of translation.

If you're looking for the most accurate translation then out of the ones you listed I'd go with the ESV. If you're willing to use a digital version you could look at something like esword and buy the modules that aren't free, which would let you put all of them side by side so you can see for yourself, or chop and change between them.

I am not sure among those translations you listed, but suspect ESV is the best of them.

Why not check out the KJV Easy Read (KJVER), aka the Sword Bible. It is the King James with words put in modern language where feasible and where not feasible, they give an alternate word that is not meant to be an alternate translation but explanatory. Also you get the bonus, Words of God in Red, which means there is a lot o red text in the Old Testament.

I already ordered the ESV from a different site, Christianbook. I bought a two toned leather-like Bible plus added my name imprinted on it in a gold color (gold leaf?). It has gold gilded pages, my name imprinted, Jesus’ words in red and it’s still about 1/2 the price of the one I originally wanted, which didn’t have all that. The downside is it doesn’t have extra space for writing, but that’s ok.

The Bible I ordered isn’t as pretty and feminine as the one I wanted but I wasn’t going to get an answer to my question until next week about if the Sinners Prayer was included in in original Bible so I went with this other company instead. I think that this one will be easier to clean if I get fingerprints on it, plus the gilded pages and name printed on it in gold leaf will make it more to my liking, the company is one I’m familiar with so that’s a bonus too. No pretty flowers, though.
