Yes, they're real friends. I spend a lot of time with my online friends and some of us have known each other for a decade or more! We have a trust and bond that is just as valuable as in person relationships.

They can be but caution is warranted.
I have people I met on forums similar to this one that I loosely consider friends. I've spoken to them on the phone and spent a lot of time talking online, both via forums and private chat facilities. I urge caution because it's so much easier to maintain a false persona online when nobody can see you, when you can correct anything you say before you send it.

Long before my time, people had "pen pals." People (often far away) with whom they exchanged letters but typically never met. My wife's grandparents met this way during WWII, her church encouraged people to be "pals" with servicemen oversees... they "fell in love" via letters before they ever actually met. It seems the internet has replaced mail in several ways, including this.
I'm cautious. I don't give my last name, my address or phone numbers or even employment - just as a matter of policy, even when I'm 99% sure the other person is safe. I think this is just wise... but I also have a bad experience when I was a young teen (I STILL don't have a personal facebook page for this reason). I'm here at CH simply as an internet member - it's not personal.

I'd say they are real friends. If you're over 18, I don't see why there are any barriers to meeting them in real life if you can financially afford it. The way this world is going, most things are online. Instead of kids knocking at each other's door to play outside, most of them play on video games nowadays through multi-player.
