No, it's not. I'd say it's allowing people to connect worldwide, regardless of their financial state as online communication is generally free. Before social media, people had to pay to send messages internationally, so this is a positive of social media.

I think social media is making the world a worse place. Where people used to talk to each other now they spend their time on social media. Things that are very nuanced in reality get turned into 140-character soundbites on social media. People being presented with their own echo chambers who know what to think but don't know how to think are apparently less and less able to discuss rationally and so resort to throwing insults.

Even among friends it seems social media is stifling conversation. It seems more and more there's less to talk about because some people post absolutely everything on social media so there's not much to talk about and others appear to figure that if you didn't post about it you don't want to talk about it.
