I have a good friend who is in sales and travels all over the world.... He's stated that the worse, most dangerous cities he visits tend to be in the USA and specifically mentioned Detroit.

Closer to home, there are areas in metro LA that are best to avoid, but just areas - and even there, if you care careful and mind your business, it's okay. I think that's true in most big cities. I've learned to simply be cautious... keep the car locked and parked carefully, with all valuables in the trunk.... watch your wallet... be careful of using your credit card in some neighborhoods (scanners can rip off your info)... don't ever be alone.

I've been the victim of crime only twice in my life - both in Europe. Tourists need to be careful... bad people work where tourists are numerous.

From what I've heard about troublesome cities in the USA it seems you can go from the good areas that are perfectly safe to the bad areas where you'll potentially get shot within a couple of blocks. In European cities it's not always all that different, with the rider you're not likely to get shot (although whether that's much consolation if you're attacked with a knife or a baseball bat is debatable)

In years gone by New York City always felt very safe to me. I remember one vacation I was taking in the sights of NYC and, for reasons I forget, I had the better part of $2000 in cash on me. I didn't feel remotely unsafe. In London I'm wary with half that much cash. Now the roles are reversed - I'm still wary in London but would have no interest at all in going to NYC. Partly because of news reports about people getting shot/stabbed/pushed into traffic and partly because I just don't like NYC all that much. Truth be told I don't like big cities at all these days, the only reason I have to go to a city is if there's something there that I need.

Nowhere in the states, I think overall it is sage enough if you take precautions and stay out of the "bad" areas.

Outside of the USA I would say any major city in Russia. Even before the war I felt this way. I have known too many people that had issues with the police and residents trying to extort them outright - the corruption is terrible. It is no problem on a tour, they manage everything so there are not any issues, but on your own is a completely different story.

Other than Russia there are a few cities in Africa like Lagos and Kinshasa, all of Asia is pretty safe overall, Honduras in general, Haiti. If I were a woman I would not want to travel alone in parts of the Middle East and North Africa, but as a man I don't have any real concerns about that. That's probably about it.

I guess the eternal question is knowing where the bad areas are. Too bad if you stray into a bad area without realising your mistake.

That said it never ceases to amaze me how many people you see walking around with headphones on looking at their phones. Even if you live in an area you're making yourself far more vulnerable to someone who wants to take advantage in some way - if someone were to approach from behind you wouldn't know about it until it was too late.

Very valid point. However, I know my home city well enough to avoid this and when I travel I generally have no need to walk anywhere outside of the main tourist spots; I am not much of an "urban explorer". Not that all tourist areas are safe, but by and large they are safer areas of town for the most part.

I live near Detroit and spent 30 years driving downtown to work daily. Most dangerous part of my day is walking to and from parking lots down there. I am glad I am now on work-at-home about 98% of the time as I lower my risk substantially.

I don't want to visit any big cities. I think they all are dangerous.

I heard that East St. Louis is very bad.

Any place we have the Great Society plantations. They (you should know which political party) just moved the black people from slave plantations to welfare plantations. They have a little more freedom, but are still enslaved to the state by the welfare checks. This induces all kinds of bad habits and lack of responsibility. Life becomes cheap.

Most people probably know their home towns well enough to stay safe, as long as they pay attention. But then so many people play with the "I should be able to..." mentality and put their personal safety at risk in the process.

Many years ago I lived in a town where there was a spate of attacks on young women late at night. They were very regular - before the police caught the culprit I think he raped two women and attacked another two in the space of a week or so (of the two "attacks" I think at least one of the victims escaped). Yet you'd still see young women walking alone, after dark, in the area a rapist was known to be operating, oblivious to their surroundings.

Some years later I lived in another area not far from where several people were attacked by an assailant with a hammer. From what I recall he basically approached people from behind and hit them with the hammer. I think his motives were robbery rather than rape although most of his victims were women. And yet time and time again you'd see young women walking alone with a hood up and headphones playing music loudly enough you could hear it from 20 feet away.

I still remember what a former karate instructor of mine stressed to our class. At the time I was about a green belt and she was a 2nd dan black belt. By any metric she'd absolutely thrash me in a sparring match. But as she said in a street fight there are no rules and, since I was easily twice her size, all I'd need to do is land one good strike and it's pretty much game over for her.

To quote Mr Miyagi, sometimes the best defence is "no be there".

As noted above, the best fight is the one you avoid. In a street fight, you should be relentless and not quit until the other guy is incapacitated. If you don't he will do it to you. These people have litlle to nothing to lose and have experience fighting too. If they have a knife, you are in big trouble and may be best off running away if possible. Even with a gun, a guy threatening you with a knife from 7 yards away, can suddenly come at you and be on you in less than 2 seconds. You might get one or two shots off but he will viciously stab you in the process.
