Scientific research becomes unethical when it seeks to learn, and understand truth about the universe or man, without God.
Man and science then become the source of truth. So they like to believe.

Your question - while kind of unusual for a Christian website - is a valid and important one, and one often asked. But it is FAR from easy to answer. It MIGHT be easier if research is into how to end Polio or perhaps to find new planets or determine how much weight can a bridge bear.... but it's more difficult when we explore The Manhattan Project or President Reagan's "star wars" or even Darwin's theories.
Truth is a funny thing.... it often can be used for good or bad, and sometimes both. The problem, I would argue, is not with science or truth but with fallen, sinful people. In whose hands is this knowledge placed... what do those with this knowledge choose to DO with it? I might argue it's people who are unethical, not truth.

It's unethical if the subject of an experiment doesn't know what they're agreeing to, if they're misled about what's going to happen, or if it's done without them agreeing at all.
