I loosely know a couple with seven kids, of which precisely none were even remotely cute. I learned the art of strategic silence....

You don't need to comment about the aesthetics of the baby. The parents are happy, share in their joy. A sincere comment about the parents "you look so happy" or "I'm so happy for you" is great.
