I have a rubber square thing from Tupperware that grips the jar lid enough for me to open it. Only once did that not work and I ran the jar under very hot water and tapped it lightly on the counter before using the gripper and it finally gave way.

I have a rubber square thing as well that I don't often need but comes in handy every once in a while. If that doesn't work I have been known to use a range of wrenches to open things. I have a few beers in the basement with corked bottles that are desperately hard to open, so I often use channel locks to grip the cork so I can gently ease it out.

The rubber jar opener ususally does the trick. someone showed me another trick that works where you go between the crimp parts on the lid, stick the spoon under the edge of the lid (concave facing you), and gently push the handle down, it will break the seal, you will hear the hiss, and then the lid will easily screw off. High quality spoons of heavy gauge metal often won't fit, so a cheap spoon that is thinner metal works better.

Run the lid under hot water. It will expand the metal lid and allow it to be opened easily.

Sometimes that works. Sometimes it just makes the lid wet and harder to grip.
