Why does the book of Revelation say that you can anoint your eyes with medicine to cure blindness?

Tobit teaches salvation by works … a heretical teaching contradicted by the Apostles.
I have no doubt why Tobit is not canon. Either Tobit or the Pauline Letters need to be removed.

[Romans 11:6 CSB] Now if by grace, then it is not by works; otherwise grace ceases to be grace.
So James... ?
Tobit was before the time of Christ and yes the apostles DID teach Charity toward strangers.

Be honest or this conversation is over.

Do you really believe that James teaches salvation by works?
(Then quote him).

Did any apostle teach that charity towards strangers would save you?
(Then quote them).

Tobit quite literally says that alms will save you.
That is salvation based on good works.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that.
The Bible does not.
That is a pretty big deal in my opinion.

Almsgiving is impossible without Faith, you know that as well as I do, seeing that any and all preaching of almsgiving/Charity spoken of in the Bible is 100% directed ONLY to those with ears to hear and eyes to see and NOT intended for the dead def and blind who can neither see nor hear and are thus unconscious to the literal word of God.

Of course James did not teach salvation by works alone, works without faith is dead and faith without works is dead, they go hand and hand.. The Apostles were very much concerned with the possibility of churches growing apathetic toward exhibitionism and falling into a pagan mentality of performing public deeds in front of onlookers so to boast off their praises, making merchandise of their exploits and being men of no faith, thus for a Christian to sink to that level of hypocrisy is of a dying faith and his deeds are in vain.

Let us compare the verse in Tobit about almsgiving to other similar verses throughout the Bible.

“Almsgiving delivers from death, and it will purge away every sin. Those who perform deeds of charity and of righteousness will have fullness of life;” (Tobit 12:9)

“Alms atone for sins. He who does a kindness is remembered afterward; when he falls, he finds a support.” (Ecclesiasticus 3:29-30)

“Give alms of such things as you have, and behold all things are clean unto you.” (Luke 11:41)

“Redeem thy sins by almsdeeds, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor.” (Daniel 4:27)

“Let my counsel be acceptable to you, and redeem your sins with alms, and your iniquities with works of mercy to the poor: perhaps he will forgive your offenses.” (Daniel 4:24)

“Whosoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, amen I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.” (Matthew 10:42)

“When you give alms, sound not a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honored by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your alms may be in secret; and thy Father, who sees in secret, will repay you.” (Matthew 6:2-4)

My Ecclesiastes 3 stops at verse 22.
That verse teaches the EXACT same anti-Pauline works-salvation as Tobit.

“Give alms of such things as you have, and behold all things are clean unto you.” (Luke 11:41)

Context is EVERYTHING:

[Luke 11:37-54 NKJV]
37 And as He spoke, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and sat down to eat. 38 When the Pharisee saw [it], he marveled that He had not first washed before dinner.
39 Then the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. 40 "Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? 41 "But rather give alms of such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.
42 "But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 43 "Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over [them] are not aware [of them]."
45 Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, "Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also."
46 And He said, "Woe to you also, lawyers! For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 "Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48 "In fact, you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 "Therefore the wisdom of God also said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, and [some] of them they will kill and persecute,' 50 "that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, 51 "from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.
52 "Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered."
53 And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail [Him] vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things, 54 lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, that they might accuse Him.
This is clearly not a context about “give alms and get saved” like Tobit said. This is a rebuke for works-salvation and rejecting GOD’s GRACE.

FYI:
I agree with you on James.
I do not think that is what Tobit says. (It is hard to be certain without reading the full context of Tobit, but that will be a hard verse to reverse the literal meaning based on context.)

"Charity will cover the multitude of sins"

Well gee without sin we are good to go right? and this is coming from a guy who knew Christ. Tobit on the other hand said basically same thing centuries BEFORE Christ when sin atonement was under the Law.

I mean, weren't the faithful in the OT faithful?
Isn't Faith followed by Charity evidence of Faith? Since 1 Peter 4:8 can harmonize with James on Faith and works then why does Tobit get the boot?

Will YOUR “charity” cover YOUR “sins”?
Does “cover” mean “wash away“ or “pardon”?
Was Peter teaching that our giving to the poor will buy forgiveness for sins we have committed?
That IS exactly how Tobit says it works.
Read the quote from Tobit again and tell me how I have not properly understood the words written down.

I am not unwilling to be corrected.
I was shocked by what I read and that a church leader would actually quote that without commenting.
It was a blow to my esteem for the ECFs.

PS: Tobit never got “the boot” because Tobit was never canon. It was read by some (and still is). It was available in some Bibles (and still is). It was removed from bibles that just contain the 66 books that ALL Christian Churches agree on (along with all of the other books that were not accepted by all).

Ultimately modern publishers publish what will sell. It makes no statement on canon. I have a pocket Bible that includes only Psalms and the NT. That is not a statement that Genesis got “the boot”, rather it is a statement that they thought soldiers needed the NT for salvation and Psalms for comfort (It was a gift at a recruiting station).

Oh well, now we need to discard the KJV and all modern translations that draw from the Vulgate.
You really are not making things better for someone in the 20th century that just wants to read the Word of God to learn more about this Jesus. I sure hope that fish gut eye salve magic elixir works, because we are paying a dear price for it. :(

Yea, the fish gut eye salve thing really does work. I wrote a PDF about it if you want to read it.

When Jesus says in Luke to give alms and all things are clean to you, all of a sudden context matters. But you don’t bother to check context in Tobit.

Do you really think Tobit is saying to give alms and get saved? Why then did Tobit travel up to Jerusalem before the time of captivity and offer animal (blood) sacrifices at the temple in accordance with the law of Moses?

Tobit is NOT saying give alms and it will save you. Tobit isn’t saying that any more than Jesus did in Luke.

How about the rich young ruler? Jesus told him to sell his possessions and give alms. But the man refused. Jesus then insinuated that it will be hard for the rich to enter heaven. So is Jesus saying “give alms and get saved”?

You see, when Tobit says it, you purposely misinterpret it. But when Jesus says it, you’re like, “Well, let’s look at the context.”

Can’t you see the double standard???

Tobit says giving alms purges sin. Purge means to clean. Psalm 51 “purge me with hyssop and I will be clean”
Jesus said to give alms of such things as you have and all things will be clean to you. What’s the contradiction? Jesus is insinuating the same thing as Tobit.

For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’
Deuteronomy 15:11 - Bible Gateway passage: Deuteronomy 15:11 - New King James Version

“If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs.
Deuteronomy 15:7-8 - Bible Gateway passage: Deuteronomy 15:7-8 - New King James Version

Defend the poor and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy; Free them from the hand of the wicked.
Psalm 82:3-4 - Bible Gateway passage: Psalm 82:3-4 - New King James Version

Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord, And let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. Because he did not remember to show mercy, But persecuted the poor and needy man, That he might even slay the broken in heart.
Psalm 109:14,16 - Bible Gateway passage: Psalm 109:14, Psalm 109:16 - New King James Version

Therefore, O king, let my advice be acceptable to you; break off your sins by being righteous, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your prosperity.”
Daniel 4:27 - Bible Gateway passage: Daniel 4:27 - New King James Version

Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said: “Blessed are you poor, For yours is the kingdom of God.
Luke 6:20 - Bible Gateway passage: Luke 6:20 - New King James Version

Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham;
Luke 19:8-9 - Bible Gateway passage: Luke 19:8-9 - New King James Version

But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”
Luke 14:13-14 - Bible Gateway passage: Luke 14:13-14 - New King James Version

Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?
James 2:5 - Bible Gateway passage: James 2:5 - New King James Version

Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’ ” And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.” Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor (give alms), and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, “Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.”
Mark 10:17-27 - Bible Gateway passage: Mark 10:17-27 - New King James Version

Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? But rather give alms of such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.
Luke 11:39-41 - Bible Gateway passage: Luke 11:39-41 - New King James Version

There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!” And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord?” So he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.”
Acts 10:1-4 - Bible Gateway passage: Acts 10:1-4 - New King James Version

Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.
Acts 2:44-45 - Bible Gateway passage: Acts 2:44-45 - New King James Version

Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need. And Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus, having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
Acts 4:32-37 - Bible Gateway passage: Acts 4:32-37 - New King James Version

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter. You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.

Read the quote from Tobit again and tell me how I have not properly understood the words written down.

I am not unwilling to be corrected.
However, it appears that the rabid fans of Tobit and buying salvation are unwilling or unable to correct me by explaining. “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, he means the opposite of what he says” is the best that I can get in response.

Tobit says what it says and your carefully selected misquotes from Peter and James say EXACTLY the same heretical lie, they do not change what Tobit says. Feel free to give to the poor to buy your salvation as you seem to believe. At this point I will waste no more time on dishonest or heretical conversation.

I am finished with this topic … time to shake off the dust and move on.

That doesn’t explain 1 Peter 4:8.
If Peter’s words were found in the apocrypha, you’d reject it and call it heresy.

What Tobit says is in agreement with what Peter, Jesus, and James say. You just cherry pick out Tobit because you’ve already made up your mind that it’s apocryphal. That’s the point.

That quote is from Peter not Tobit

That quote is from Peter not Tobit

The Peter quote is not how to receive salvation and is taken out of context. Look at 1 Peter 3 and you'll see that it proclaims Jesus as the reason for salvation, not our works. Concept is key. Living our lives as little Christs is what is being discussed in the 4th chapter, not how to get salvation because that was already discussed.

The Tobit quote is also taken out of context. That’s the point that Andrew and I are making. Tobit is not contradicting the fact that a blood sacrifice was necessary for the forgiveness of sins. And of course, neither is Peter. Tobit himself went to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices before the Assyrian captivity. Tobit is NOT contradicting the gospel, and neither is Peter.

That doesn’t explain 1 Peter 4:8.
If Peter’s words were found in the apocrypha, you’d reject it and call it heresy.
In 1 Peter 4:8 the word “charity” in the KJV is “agape” in the Greek.
Do you have a clue what “agape” means and is that “giving money to the poor”? (charity/alms)
That will explain 1 Peter 4:8 (or you could just read more modern English in any translation less than 150 years old).

[1 Peter 4:8 NKJV] And above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love will cover a multitude of sins."

(This topic is not worth effort, but defending the Word of God from heretical misuse is.)
