Who is the salt?

Who is the salt? What group of people was Jesus talking to? How did they lose their saltiness? How were they trampled underfoot by men?

Who is the salt? What group of people was Jesus talking to? How did they lose their saltiness? How were they trampled underfoot by men?

I believe He is talking to His believers. They are salt of the earth. Although the salt is still mixed with bits of other things (back then salt would not be as pure as it is today) it is able to prevent rot. Our saltyness is our moral character and faith and the rot we help prevent is degredation of the church and society. However when the salt gets wet it loses that saltiness. Once that happens the best thing it can do is be trampled underfoot, which to me means that the believers or church that lost their purity are brought low and to repentance.

The Church is to be an influence on society that makes society better. Unfortunately, it seems that the Church has hid from society or joined with society instead of working to better society. This may be the reason our nation and the world are in such a mess today.
