I really like the smell of the woods this time of year. When it's cool enough to go for a long walk without overheating, but not so cold I need a dozen layers to constantly shuffle during the day, things are good. Can't wait to see frost on the leaves, should be very photogenic!

Just wear bright colors and stick to major trails, it works for me. I wouldn't hike in game lands during hunting season though.

When any hunting seasons are active I use a two-tone vest - it's a combination of bright orange and bright yellow with reflective piping. I wear it when cycling in the dark as well - you can see me nearly half a mile away. There's no way anyone could possibly mistake me for a deer :)

I've hiked in the woods in PA in October and November before. I've encountered a couple of hunters as the sun went down, and seen a few pickups parked at the edges of the mountain roads (presumably while the drivers hunted) but never had any sense I was in danger.

I did chat with a forest ranger once who told me of a guy who thought a black woolly hat was a good thing to wear in the woods during bear season. Don't know if he got out safely or not. He probably looked a lot more like a bear than I do with my hi-vis vest on.

I know most are responsible and do the right thing but I have also seen the other side. Years ago I remember a couple guys from Philly pulling into a gas station with a goat tied on their car. When they were told it was a goat they got mad and thought the gas station owner was trying to steal their deer,
