Why does Exodus 30 say that money atones for sins?

Exodus chapter 30 says this:

“The half-shekel shall be an offering to the Lord.
Everyone included among those who are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give an offering to the Lord.
The rich shall not give more and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when you give an offering to the Lord, to make atonement for yourselves.
And you shall take the atonement money of the children of Israel, and shall appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of meeting, that it may be a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord, to make atonement for yourselves.”
-Exodus 30:13-16 (NKJV)

Like I asked in your other thread, please give us the word in the original language for "atonement" so we can go from there.

Switch and bait.

There is NO EVIDENCE that the books of Maccabees was even written before the 4th century AD, only COPIES exists.

What we DO know is that the Jews possessed the original Exodus because we have copies.

This thread is now about attacking Nathan's wild eyed conspiracies instead of this whole money for atonement thing in Exodus he mentions.

ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK!

Okay, so WHO gave that translation from Hebrew into English please?

I don't think you understand what I'm asking.

I'm asking for the ORIGINAL text first. Not English and then translating into Hebrew.

I have a Key Word study Bible at home which might tell me. But I have to wait until I get home, which won’t be for several hours.

In the meantime, do you know the original Hebrew word?

I don't have access to the original manuscript but if it's Kaphar then it means to cover over. You get a better understanding if you look into the original Hebrew instead doing doing backward translations.

Here’s the passage in Exodus 30. The word atonement is underlined, and it references 3725:

When you look it up in the back, this is what 3725 is:

Actually, Nathan's question is a highly relevant one, and should be treated as such.

=========================================================================

The word in the Hebrew is actually a verb ( לכפר), the particular form of which has the same significance as the noun meanings presented in earlier posts. (A quick summary of Hebrew verb forms and their significance can be given upon request. As can the whole sentence in Hebrew.)

=========================================================================

To answer Nathan's question directly, the contribution was to be used in the construction of the Tabernacle (where God would establish a special presence with the people). The Tabernacle was where the God-appointed rituals which would result in atonement for the people, would be performed. Without the tabernacle, there would be no mechanism for atonement.

So in a very real sense, the people's contributions were associated directly with their atonement – not in the sense that their contributions bought atonement, but that their contributions resulted in their ability to be atoned.

=========================================================================

(And as an aside, have I noticed an example of flaming that for some reason has not been addressed?

In George Orwell’s book Animal Farm, the species of animal that gained control over the others after the farmer had been driven out, issued the statement: “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”.)
