I danced with my daughter's dog this morning. When is the last time you danced?

Last weekend. I was shooting hoops with my foster daughter and we had some music on so I figured I'd be "embarrassing dad" and dance to the music while shooting hoops.

My beloved and I do Scottish folk dancing called Country Dance. Not in a few weeks but we are a part of a group. My wife is good, I'm not.

There are only a few dances (I think) but endless variations of each and a lot of freedom to "interpret" (unlike the Scottish dancing you are much more familiar with; my beloved does that too). Do I wear a Kilt? Sometimes. Do I wear shorts under it? Yeah. Does it itch? Yeah. Does that bagpipe stuff ever get old? Yes sir. Is it fun? Yes.... but mostly just good social fun that my wife's whole family is into.

Does this remind you just a bit of American square dancing? Guess where that came from.

Josiah, that looks like SO MUCH FUN!

I used to go country (western) dancing at least once a week. - two-stepping and line-dancing. Those were such good, fun years, and added variety to my physical routine (stair-stepping and running). I would give almost anything to do that again, but it seems the only places people go dancing is at the bars. I'm too old for bars, but would have a blast if we had barn-dances every week. I have not danced since just before I broke my leg in August 1999. :(

You're not too old for bars, unless the bars in your area are specifically exclusive.

I still hang out with people old enough to be my parents and sometimes go with them to bars and pubs.

I used to know a guy but hardly ever saw him due to living in different countries. He would always take me to his local bar when I visited the area. The last time I visited before he died he didn't see too well and so couldn't drive any more, and I desperately wanted to take him to the bar (returning the favor he'd done for me so many times) so we could hang out one last time but he declined. He was pushing 90 the last time he took me to the bar.

Ninety and going to the bar? Wow! I figured I'm too old almost pushing 60. lol. I have nothing in common with young people and no one to dance with. I'll be satisfied with walking until other opportunities come up. Loved dancing when I could, though!

Maybe bars are different where you are. This particular bar is open to just about anyone - I've seen families eating in there with small children, teenagers hanging out playing pool (drinking soft drinks) and adults of all ages eating and drinking. Admittedly I don't think I've ever seen anyone dancing in there but if they had a dance floor I don't imagine anyone would care if older people wanted to dance. This particular bar really is a "come as you are" bar, their only dress code is that you have to be dressed. Most of the time people in there have been outdoors at some point during the day it seems - I've been in there smelling of a heady mixture of sweat, sunscreen and bug repellant after a long hike and often seen people in there in full hunting gear including face paint.

I hate bars.

Now, a comfortable, relaxed, quiet lounge... or wine bar.... with conversation areas.... where you can enjoy a glass of wine or Scotch accompanied by conversation with friends (or that significant other).... THAT'S nice. I like that. Such doesn't have dancing, of course.

Relating to this, the kind of dance popular at bars (non Western ones anyway) is often empowered by a goodly number of stiff drinks. And since such bars are often about "hooking up", that too can be empowered by the same. But the dance I do is hindered by booze ... and I have my beloved.

I guess bars differ more by area than I first thought. I personally prefer to talk than dance but lots of bars near me offer that. Like you, I don't feel any desire to hook up with anyone aside from my wife, so that aspect of nightlife is kinda lost on me. I can still go and enjoy a few good beers, as long as my wife is willing to drive home afterwards. Sadly the last time I was driving home the place we visited had a couple of very nice looking imperial stouts on offer that I couldn't sample, and the next time she was driving the stouts were finished. Beers clocking in at 12% abv are a spectacularly bad idea if you have to drive home.

People eat in bars? I think our bars are different then. We have pubs where people eat, they have music that gets louder as the evening goes on, and no dance floor. Our bars open at 8:00 pm and it's not about food. It's about the drinks and the dance floor - and the mechanical bull. lol. Party time. I'm too old to party, but I don't mind going to pubs at this age.

Maybe different people call them different things. I tend to think of bars and pubs as being interchangeable. In my younger years technically the pub was the building and the bar was the specific part of the building where you went to buy your drinks. People would either sit at the bar to drink or take the drinks to a table.

Depending on the location and time the table may or may not be an option - in city pubs on a Friday after 5pm it would be common to be standing room only and the overall volume of the conversations going on would be loud enough it was all but impossible to communicate without shouting.
