My laptop has a 512 GB HDD (soon to become an SSD). So how much does your laptop, desktop, or tablet have? Do you need more than, say, 256 GB?

My drive is split and the main one I use has over 300GB. I barely touch half that even with all my photos and artwork on there.

I rarely use my desktop, but it has 2.5TB, my laptop has 1TB, likely to be upgraded soon. I also use 2TB external drives.

My photography folders alone are over 500GB, so I need a lot of space.

My space needs are not great. The desktop uses about 800 GB spread across three drives about 150GB on the 500GB SSD boot drive, about 400 GB on an internal 1 TB HDD, and about 300GB on the 1 TB external HDD used mainly for backups.

I put 150gb of older event pictures onto two external drives to free up space on my internal drive. I should probably upgrade to a 2tb ssd. I really like the look of the 4tb version but don't like the \$1400 price tag.

For 1,400 USD one can get a rather nice laptop with a lot of storage space in its own right.

I know, there's a laptop I was looking at that put mine to shame (it's 4 years old and still better than most laptops out there) but it was more like \$3500.

I think that the large capacity NVME SSDs are too expensive.

Interestingly in the Samsung 850 range the sweet spot looks like it's the 2TB one. The 2TB is only marginally less than twice the price of the 1TB but still offers a better price/storage point. The 4TB is more than twice the price of the 2TB, but when the 2TB isn't on special there's not a whole lot in it.

I still don't fancy paying \$1400 for a drive for my laptop. To replace my laptop with anything even remotely comparable would almost certainly cost more than that (I paid the equivalent of around \$2000 for it back in either 2011 or 2012, and that didn't include Windows or any software). It still beats the spec of just about anything I can see for sale today, short of paying some fairly ugly numbers.

for me a 500GB SSD is abundant storage for the innards of the laptop and I can use external HDDs for bulky files.

I just checked the current size of my photo folder. It's somewhere north of 500GB, and that's after archiving 150-odd GB of files onto external drives.

Looks like you need to do more archiving :)

Not really, I have a large library that I want to have on hand rather than needing to fuss with ever-more external drives.

Sometimes an individual picture takes up a lot of space. I've got one, a panoramic of 64 RAW files, where one image accounts for 64 RAW files (at about 15MB each), 64 16-bit TIFF files (about 75MB each), the raw stitched panoramic (a little under 1GB) and the working file with multiple Photoshop layers (somewhere near 2GB). Then you get the associated files, a web-sized JPEG (small) and a print quality PDF (not small).

Only 250G on my HP Windows 10 Laptop. It's not enough to store everything, so I have Google Drive with 100Gig to backup all the important data-eating images, photos, and documents! It's very cheap, at £1.59 a month!

Cloud Storage is definitely the way to go.

The trouble with cloud storage is that you can only access it when you have access to the internet, and you're on the hook paying for it forevermore.

I'd rather keep my files on my own computer than on someone else's.
