In 2006, the International Organization for Septuagint and Cognate Studies established February 8 as International Septuagint Day, a day to celebrate the Septuagint and encourage its study.

Below is a pic of 4Q120 (4 = cave 4, Q = Qumran). This is a fragment from Leviticus 4:26-28. It is one of few fragments we have which date before the 1st century A.D. One of its most important features is that the divine name is spelled with Greek letters (iota, alpha, omega).

Since I truly believe in encouraging others to study the LXX, I thought I would post some other interesting facts.

The LXX Daniel was not the preferred version of the church. For some reason LXX Daniel was rejected in favor of Theodotion's version.

Jerome informs us:
"I also wish to emphasize to the reader the fact that it was not according to the Septuagint version but according to the version of Theodotion himself that the churches publicly read Daniel." St. Jerome's Commentary on Daniel.

Theodotion's version was so widely used and copied that the LXX Daniel version survives in only two known manuscripts (i.e. Codex Chisianus 45 - a 10th century A.D., and P967 - 3rd century A.D.).

Below is a pic of the first page of LXX Daniel from Codex Chisianus 45.

Different LXX manuscripts\codices sometime contain difference Greek versions of some books. Just like the book of Daniel (see above post 2) there are two Greek versions of Esther. They are the Old Greek version (OG) and the Alpha-Text version (AT). The AT is found in only 4 manuscripts and is considerably shorter than both than the OG and the MT. I am providing a translation of chapter two for comparison, both texts side by side. It does not take long to notices there are substantial differences between the two.
