...lest the ignorant mislead you with their wild eyed nonsensical theories due to their lack of understanding...
On facebook in a Christian discussion group the topic of the "Mark of the Beast" sprung up and I was truly amazed at how paranoid and fanatical the majority of Christians in the discussion group came off as.
I had some of my own baseless conspiracy theories concerning 666 before in the past but I was surprised that not one of them had anything close to reassembling the truth whatsoever.
I went ahead and chimed in with my take on the matter, after all Revelation is my favorite book and I love diving into my historical studies of early Christianity.
Here is my short copy pasta of what I posted and mind you I wrote it rather quickly so it's a little messy but oh well, enjoy my crazy theory on the Mark of the Beast!
--------
The heads of the beast are made up of kings (men) and the "man" of perdition is (in Johns day) the sitting emperor, all of the emperors make up the beast, simple.
Nero was ONE of the heads and John used him as an example of identifying these men using numbers, in Nero's case it was 666 or 616 and at the time his coins baring that mark/image were in wide circulation.
John could not just say "Emperors" or "Nero", so he exposes them through mediums (coins, pottery, statues) that bare both the name of the beast and the name of a man (roman empire/sitting emperor).
Now the permanency of the mark represent the wicked majority (secularist) who follow the beast in admiration and praise, as a Roman citizen it was illegal to be a Christian, having money was necessary indeed, Christians were not of that secular world but belonged to the Kingdom of God, hence why they are marked with the mark of God instead of the mark of the beast..
For me "Hand" also means "works" (whether good or bad), "Forehead" = 'attention', so in my opinion Christians focus on God thus receive the mark of God while unbelievers turn away from God and to the beast thus receive it's mark
