How do you politely tell someone they reek of body odor?

Depends on who it is and how well I know them.

This, too.

If it's a total stranger, I wouldn't say anything.
If it's my son, I tell him his pits reek and he needs to go put on some deodorant :D

This is the key thing. It would also depend on just how badly they smell and if there are specific circumstances. If a friend had just spent hours helping me work in the hot sun and smelled as a result I wouldn't mention it at all, other than maybe as a backhanded joke.

If a friend smelled in a situation where they wouldn't be expected to smell, and if they had an opportunity to do something about it, a quiet word with them would suffice. If there wasn't anything at all they could do about it then unless they smelled absolutely foul it wouldn't help to tell them.

Years ago I got on a train one evening and the first thing that hit me was an almost unbearable stench. I actually asked another commuter whether something had curled up and died under the seats or something. It turned out there was a tramp in the carriage, who smelled so bad the stench was practically weapons-grade at 50 paces. The best solution there was simply to move to a different carriage to avoid the assault on my nostrils.

I agree!

If it were my daughter I would pretty much tell her "You're a little ripe today!" and she would know what I mean :D For my husband I would tell him he stinks. For anyone else I would suffer through it and not say a word.

I say nothing if that's just how they always were but if they have good hygiene and started slacking I bring it up to them

Depends on who it is and what environment I was in. If it's a friend, family, friend, or colleague the best way forward would be to have a 1-1 discussion privately and let him or her know. Suggesting" it would be a good idea to put on more deodorant, as it's hot at the moment".
