Last night I did a Windows update before shutting down and it took 50 minutes and 4 restarts. Then this morning my system wouldn't boot up properly and I had to do a hard shut down and turn it on again. The boot up was incredibly long after that.

Just warning those who use PCs and haven't had this update yet. It's a big one.

Just one reason I don't let Windows do automatic updates. The last thing I want is to find it takes an hour to shut down when I want to go to bed, or takes an hour or more to apply updates before I can use my computer just because Microscoff decided they have to be applied right now.

I configure Windows to tell me when updates are available but I decide when (and indeed whether) to install them.

It actually gave me the choice to shut down or do the update and I thought the update would have been a quick one like the last one. I wish it would tell me an approximate time for the update.

Since then I've had problems booting up the system both mornings now.

I've never seen it give any indication of how long something might take, nor have I seen an option to do something later. When all you get is the spinning circle of dots and "please wait" you do wonder whether a company the size of Microsoft really couldn't hire some programmers or something.

Then for good measure you get their style of progress bar where it takes 5 minutes to get from the start to 99% complete and another 5 hours to get from 99% to finished.

After this new update I keep having problems with my sound on the task bar and to fix it I go to Task Manager and restart Windows Explorer and it returns to normal. It's a pain to have to do daily though.
