NRA in Deep Trouble

It looks like the National Rifle Association is in deep trouble for two reasons. First, due to the spate of high profile mass shootings, their donations are way down taking them from a $28 million surplus in 2015 to a deficit of $36 million in 2018. Secondly, the executives appear to be literally looting the organization. The New York State is taking action in much the same way that it acted to shut down President Trump's fraudulent charity.

The NY attorney general seems to be alleging that the shortfall is a result of fraud rather than a dropoff in contributions. If the executives have been looting the organisation they need to face serious consequences but that doesn't seem like a reason to shut down the entire organisation, unless it can be shown that it serves no purpose. I suspect several million gun owners around the country would dispute the assertion it serves no purpose, even if the current executive does turn out to be unfit for the purpose.

I did, and I'm still not sure why fraud by senior executives (assuming such is ever proven) requires the entire organisation to be dissolved.

To be honest, given the powers-that-be in NY appear to be pulling underhand tricks to try and shut down lawful gun-related companies, (e.g. trying to strong-arm banks into pulling banking facilities, thereby crippling companies), it's hard to see this as much more than a political exercise. If it transpires that the executives of the NRA have been defrauding the companies they should face appropriate sanctions but unless the entirety of the NRA can be proven to serve no purpose beyond enriching the executives it's hard to see why it needs to be dissolved. As before, dissolving the entire organisation appears to be a political point-scoring exercise.

I'm not sure that I'd agree that standing up for the fundamental right to defend yourself is any more political than many (most?) other nonprofits. Truth be told I see more and more of the machinations of government and pressure groups as providing ever-more proof of why we need a vastly smaller government than we have now.
