Another news report (fox) stated that Michigan has seen a lot of finds such as this...300 mastodons and 30 mammoths. Can you imagine how killing just one of these big beasts could feed an entire village?

I'm sure. The stats are about right. The amazing part to me is the sheer size of these things. I'm sure if the farmer had let these guys have at it and dig on the plot where he found the tusks, they could have unearthed the whole skeleton (or close to it). There are a number of finds in Michigan, as well as a good number of skeletons on display.

I wonder if part of the skeletal remains encroached on other farmer's land and they didn't want it dug up? Or, how much of a loss to their farm is it to let them dig properly since it takes so much time?

It's definitely something I'd like to see. I would love to go to an archaeological site and watch how it all unfolds...weeks and weeks later, of course, since it takes so long! LOL
