Don't get in the habit of paying someone else to do stuff you can easily do yourself. I'm primarily thinking of buying a sandwich for lunch, buying a coffee in the morning and the like.

At the same time watch out for false economies - don't be penny wise and pound foolish. Saving 50c now isn't much of a gain if it ends up costing you an extra $5 next week.

Realize that NEED and WANT are not the same thing.

Furthermore, the question "do I REALLY want this?" is a good one to ask once something is identified as a want.

It's very easy to get caught up in the idea that something classed as a want needs to be deferred forever and, unless a budget is so tight there's no room at all for fun stuff, that's not necessarily a good way to live. It's just so very easy to figure "I want this" and buy it, only to get it home and leave it in a closet forever. A few times either my wife or I has wanted a moderately big-ticket item and our standard response is to stall the decision - a few times we've decided that if we still want it in a week we'll go ahead and buy it, only to find that within that week the desire passed.
