Waiting for the neighbors to stop on by.
Wondering how long I've been gone. I inadvertently closed the tab for the site on my tablet, and so missed checking in over coffee. In case it's been months or something, hi all, I'm tango
If you had waited until the weekend was over (after we do the migration to Xenforo 2.0) then you'd have gotten a real shock and not recognized the place!
Now that would be like something out of the Twilight Zone.
I do hope my 35,000,000-odd CH cash will be preserved. If not, do I have time to donate it to your pot so you can make a donation to charity with it?
ETA: On reflection, what's the exchange rate between CH cash and hard currency? It would be nice to turn 35m CH cash one-for-one into dollars. It would beat working for a living....
I think I conclusively won the informal "who can amass the biggest fortune" game
Had I not timed out for a week I'd have had over another million. Oh well.... easy come easy go I guess.
I think having a bank with interest really ruined the value of the CH Cash. We learned from that mistake though so if we ever have a type of system again we have a lot of new ideas on how to implement it and what not to do.
Compound interest demonstrates very nicely how much easier it is to work with passive income than active income. At present I can get something like 170,000 CH cash every day in interest by doing nothing but earning that much by "working" here would require 50,000 posts every day.
There's a life lesson in there somewhere
Seriously though, you're right that when numbers get too big it takes something away from the purpose of it. I must admit I have mixed views on the merits of rewarding specific behaviors simply because it potentially encourages undesirable behavior. If you're a newish user and need 2000 CH cash to buy something in the shop an easy way to get it would be to just start a thread and spam it, much like the counting threads over on another forum. It also potentially encourages site owners to introduce arbitrary limits (e.g. PM inbox size) so the limits can be increased in exchange for some token currency.
That's one reason why our Fun & Games forum doesn't add to the post count...but we couldn't get the software to stop giving CH Cash from what I recall.
If we ever do this all over again we would have it to where the member would need to make a post that at least has 5 or maybe even 10 words in that post to count and possibly even only have it count in certain areas of the site. We want content on the site not a bunch of posts saying I agree, you know?
I know exactly what you mean. Personally I don't see a lot of merit in awarding anything that even looks like status tags based on post count, simply because it can so easily encourage the kind of behaviors you don't really want on a forum. The last thing a site needs is a load of people spamming just to get a higher post count because, you know, you get your name in pretty colors once you hit 50,000 posts.
In general it's probably safe to say that anything intended to promote a useful behavior will get subverted and end up promoting a useless behavior. Even if everything is based on reputation points that need to be awarded by another user, if there's anything that looks like a prize on offer sooner or later people will figure out that they can just form a little backslapping club and get to the top of the leaderboard. I would say it's easy to wonder why, but then I'm the guy who still collected my interest even though I've got 35,000,000 more CH cash than I could possibly ever use.
