Why can't they learn how to tie a tie?

For the 3rd time this year I've seen a news article on someone not knowing how to tie a tie and some good Samaritan comes in to save the day.

What is it that people cannot learn how to tie a tie? I mean, there are YouTube videos for everything.

So many guys my age and younger simply never learned..... To some guys, jeans with a t-shirt and sandals is "formal wear." So.... if a tie is actually stated as needed, they have no clue how to do it. But Lamm, you are right. It's easy and I'm SURE there are plenty of YouTubes to share the means. By the way, a tie not only needs a nice knot but needs to be the right length (that's actually trickier than the knot). Trump frustrates the ______ out of me! He ties it MUCH TOO LONG. But he seems to be setting a fashion, now I'm starting to see guys with those ties several inches below their belt. It should come NO lower than the belt line and probably a inch or so above that.


When I was a boy living on the beach of California, I simply opened the top drawer and pulled out my boxers.... next drawer and pulled out a t-shirt of some color (I was never into graphics) IF I HAD to wear a shirt (which I avoided if at all possible).... next drawer for shorts and next for socks. I may have done this in the dark... and didn't care anyway... so maybe it kind of went together or not but who cared and who noticed? THAT was the full extent of fashion. The one exception, however, was church. I wore a SUIT to church. Yup, a full suit. With white shirt and a tie. And I stopped wearing clip on ties when I was maybe 10 (Dad teaching me). I did this 90% because my parents MANDATED it.... and partly because I saw worship as a very special thing suggesting this. PARENTS - teach your kids. Later, my older sister starting shopping with me and giving me advise. She said, "You clean up nice." And I kind of got her point. So, by college,I knew how to dress nicely and appropriately - and usually did. I have my sister to thank. Now, my wife helps some but generally, I understand. Point: LADIES - you are needed!

Never learned it myself, they have those zipper ties now and clip ons I did try to learn it once but then forgot.
I personally don't care to wear what feels like a noose around my neck

I don't know when I learned to tie a tie or who taught me. But I had to dress for work (tie and jacket) for a 20+ years until business casual was allowed on Fridays. Then it was business casual, slacks and a knit shirt everyday, then jeans were introduced on Fridays. Today, is Friday, and I'm in a knit shirt, slacks, suspenders and a jacket and also leather shoes. The person next to me is in a sweatshirt, jeans and gym shoes. Back to the tie thing, I have a neighbor that whenever he goes on a job interview comes over to my house with a tie in his hand.

I put it on, and tie it for him according to the collar that he will be wearing and the type of tie. Silk ties do well with full windsor knots and button down collars. Half windsor does well with small collars, thick ties and skinny guys but it's not as symmetrical. There are other knots that are crazy, but I don't wear them. They can be found on the internet with instructions.

I'm still hopeless with ties. I've owned all of two suits in my life and look funny wearing a tie given my hatchet job with them. I did follow a 'YouTube' video once for my nephew's wedding and it was adequate for the occasion.

The thing that gets me with ties is when people tie them in a shoddy looking knot, or when they leave them loose enough that their top button is very visibly undone. If you're not going to wear a tie so it looks good, just take the thing off and be done with it. A tie doesn't necessarily make someone look professional but a shoddily tied tie with the knot three inches below where it should be just makes someone look like they're out of place.

Isn't it strange that the neck tie is purely decorative and that this fashion piece is still demanded upon by society in some instances (black tie events, dinner restaurants, etc)? It has no absolute value for the person beyond a fashion piece. Why is it still popular?

It's primary purpose appears to be to demonstrate conformity to a largely arbitrarily defined standard. By any objective measure it's absurd for otherwise apparently intelligent people to voluntarily tie a noose around their own necks.

In the UK many railway staff wear clipon ties in case an angry customer tries to grab it. They are designed to just come off if they are pulled. This sort of thing raises two questions - firstly why the tie is considered necessary in the first place, and of course a secondary issue of why the railway companies acknowledge they are so useless that such angry customers are a likely occurrence but yet care sufficiently little as to not to anything to address their shortcomings.
