Luke 1:1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

Prayer surely must have been known among the Hebrews/Jews so why do you think the disciples had to ask Jesus to teach them how to pray? What changed?

I think that perhaps Jesus' disciples perhaps thought that maybe John had taught his disciples a special prayer, one they never would have been taught before in Temple or elsewhere and they desired to have Jesus teach them to pray in this way.
