Where do you go to get your car repaired? Do you have a trusted mechanic, do you take it to the dealership or do you do your own repairs?

We recently had an issue with my 10 year old Hyundai Sonata and I don't know which mechanics are trustworthy where I live so I took it an hour away to the dealership service center. They said they fixed it but when I went there it turns out the noise was still there. I was really mad because I paid a fortune!! Now they're keeping it longer and gave me a courtesy car to use for a few days. This is the first big problem we've had with the car because everything else was just maintenance. So the car isn't bad...it's the mechanics!

Historically I've gone to the local dealership because it's close enough and I always get the impression they look after me. There was a local place just a couple of miles away that was also very good - not a franchised dealer but well known locally for doing a good job at a very fair price. Sadly they recently closed their doors because the owner is moving away from the area.

I was blessed to find a good mechanic when I first moved in with my my seven and a half years ago. Especially considering I buy my cars used with cash so I just expect occaional repairs but then again I don’t have monthly car payments which can easily exceed $300.

We go to a mechanic near us. Actually, they are part of a chain, but we get good service. The only time we go to the dealerships is for recall repairs.

We live in the country and people pretty much keep to themselves. It's hard to just go up to people and ask.

How about in the closest town? A better business bureau? I also live in a rural small town so I know what youa re saying but I can still connect with friends and people in church.

I've never had to repair a car. But for maintenance (oil changes, etc.) and regular servicing, I take it to a dealership because it's paid for (the Honda came with "free" servicing, the Subie is leased by the company and gets "free" servicing with that).

For the most part there is a garage around the corner from where I live that does a good job. They have a good reputation but usually you need an appointment since they are so busy.

Someday I wanna learn basic car stuff though..like how to change a tire or something. It could come in useful.

There's a company I wanted to check out but they are so far away I can't imagine their courses would be practical. The course is titled something like "Bush Mechanics" and the idea is to be able to get a car going again more or less regardless of what happens to it. It's not about getting it running perfectly, just about getting to a place where you can drive out. If you've driven in to some remote place and managed to drop your car such that you've got a tree branch sticking out of the engine, this course will show you how to get running again.

Aside from all the complex engine management stuff these days the theory is pretty simple. You need air, fuel and a spark. Then you need a means to transfer the power to the wheels. If you can get that cobbled together then the car will drive, even if you have to use a fairly loose definition of "drive". You can always take it to be fixed properly once you're back in civilization and don't have to worry about how much water you have left.

I used to work on my own cars when I was younger. Now I take my domestic car to a local mechanic and I usually tell him what I need. My BMWs I take to the dealership and I usually don't know what's wrong with them. I have taken the BMWs to a BMW specialist when I know what I need. With him, I can buy my own parts or whatever and he will install them. Much cheaper than the dealership. I don't take my BMWs to the local mechanic, he's great with a Chevy, but I once took a BMW to get the brakes adjusted and he called me about an hour later asking where the brake fluid reservoir was located.
