A pup was run over. :(

I was on my way to get groceries and left my driveway just in time to see a car run over it across the street. Front tires, dog rolled several times and tried to run away, but was hit again - back tire ran right over it and stopped while still part on the dog. The driver had to pull a little forward to get off of it.

We all ran towards the dog, and the owner went to pick it up. The pup thought it was still under attack, so he bit the owner and drew blood. Lots of blood. We wrapped the dog up in a little blanket the other driver had in her trunk, and I drove them to the animal hospital around the corner. But the pup died on the way there. I offered because the driver that hit the pup had a child in the car and I did not want to traumatize the child more than what had just happened.

This poor guy had to go home and tell his pregnant wife that their pup was dead. My heart just aches for them, and after I got groceries, I came straight home and snuggled with my dog.

If you own a pet, please don't let them run free. Make sure they are on a leash outside. Not only will a leash prevent heartbreak like this, but it will prevent people like me having this image in my mind for probably a long time... I'm so sad for those people...

Heartbreaking sorry that it happened but these things happen when owners fail to control their pets. I am sorry that people had to go through that

I read part of your post but knew what it was about so I couldn't read through the details since it was so horrifying :( People can be very irresponsible.

A very distressing event and a sad story. I visited my brother today to see his poodle, now 16 years old and mostly blind, partly deaf, and maybe a little senile but still happy with human attention and affection. It will upset my brother and me when she dies, but to loose a puppy is very distressing. May God comfort the family in their loss.

The sad thing is that at least some of the time the problem isn't an inherently irresponsible owner. Some friends of mine lost their dog - she was young and energetic. They were putting her on her leash to take her for a walk, something caught her eye and she bolted, literally pulling free of them holding her collar. Sadly she bolted into the road, got hit by a car, and the vet's conclusion was that euthanasia was the only viable option.

When an animal owner clearly doesn't care about the well-being of their pet it's hard to have much sympathy for them if the pet dies. It's just sad when a moment's inattention or distraction starts a process that ends with a loved animal's death.

Thanks everyone... it always helps to "talk" through emotional stuff like this.

Tango, you're right... bolting can happen. Soon after I got my pup when the ex and I were still together, I came home from work when he had the dog out for his business. Wilbur saw me and bolted towards me and the leash pulled the little key ring and broke it (it was inadvertently looped through the cheap ring that comes with the license rather than the stronger ring attached to the collar). Good thing there were no distractions and Wilbur came charging towards me and not some squirrel...lol.

Lucky me, he still gets that excited to see me when I come home from work! :hearts: I will be devastated when this one dies. Meanwhile, I'm going to soak in all the love he gives me now! Live with your whole heart!
