I heard a debate once where a Christian Flat Earther supported his belief by stating that only on a flat Earth would the story of the Tower of Babel make sense... On a globe, he suggest that building a tower to heaven would have gone no where because the tower could be pointing else where, up, down, so not directly to Heaven.

Ok they built the Tower AFTER the flood not to reach into heaven but to the sky so that the whole world would be elevated in case of another flood and everyone would survive, this was in direct rebellion against God and therefore they had no intention to build to get into Heaven or up to it, but to survive God's future judgments by building a tower to reach the sky.
Fun fact, Eber had a son named Peleg which meant "Division" because the nations had become divided after the confounding of tongues, Eber aka Heber left Babel speaking a new language, the Hebrew language... Josephus included this in his Jewish historical writings as the origin of the Hebrews...

But anyway...
Tower to Heaven.
To reach Heaven to become gods?
Or to reach the skies to tower above the world so they could survive another deluge?

Genesis 11:1-9
Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

The issue is that humans had determined to lift up themselves and make themselves great so as to have no concern about God. They were making a monument to themselves for all the people to marvel at and focus upon. They didn't want God's grace. They wanted their own self-sufficiency.
God, knowing mankind's need for a promised Redeemer, would not have such a thing and thus ordained many languages in order to impress upon mankind the need for God's grace and redemption.

So like an idol.
Kind of like how the world will come together again in the end time and worship a beast in their likeness and identify themselves with it, making it speak and what not...
