There is an Alabama megachurch that is going to have its own form of police since the state incorporated a new law that "authorizes Briarwood Presbyterian to "appoint and employ one or more suitable persons to act as police officers to protect the property of the school or academy."

"Officials at Briarwood Presbyterian Church say that a police force is necessary in order to adequately protect its 4,100 members, including 2,000 students and faculty on its two campuses.

The church hopes its new security force will keep intruders and prevent trespassers from accessing the property, it said in a press release that was posted by CNN affiliate WBRC.

The officers will complete state certified training by the Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. The officers will also be trained on the proper use of a non-lethal weapon."

How do you feel about a church having its own type of police force? I can see Security officers but these will be trained as officers so it's slightly different.

Seems like if they have 2000 students and two campuses they are more than just a church. It's not like the local church on the corner with a couple of hundred regular attendees deciding they need to hire their own police. This seems more like a school or university hiring a couple of their own police.

I agree, if they can afford it then it's okay to protect their own. They have more members and students than the town and county of Mayberry, NC, USA has citizens. And they had a sheriff, a deputy and every now and then they would have part-timers.

It's okay if they are properly trained.

Churches seem more uptight about this stuff - then before. Well, it seems like some bigger churches have serious ushers at the door - no doubt, due to the shootings at churches. Well, it's too bad schools aren't doing this. In fact, it seems like the university I went to was "open campus", but at least the community college was more armed (Well, it seemed that way!).

At the high school I used to sub at they had a Resource Officer who was an actual police officer. It didn't stop a stupid kid from bringing in a gun to class one day because the girls sitting around him in Study Hall convinced him to do it and he wanted to impress them. I'm so glad I didn't sub that day.
