After the outside temperature dropped below 20 overnight and stayed there, the study is still holding at 50. Not as warm as I'd hoped but not bad given just how cold it outside and the fact I've still got a couple of gaps that need to be filled with foam. I'll need to run the heater to warm it up before spraying the foam, it's not going to cure at these temperatures, given I have to spray it into the cold spaces.

Some more time hunting drafts. I managed to determine that the drafts are coming in from the adjacent space, so cut a long length of fiberglass to stuff into the space. And then went into the adjacent space to pull it into place, only to find a patch of it was cold. I mean, seriously cold, given it had only been in place for 10 minutes at that point. So I got down to look and found a little gap, maybe 1/4" wide and 2" high, with a seriously nasty draft blowing in. Cue the "you've got to be kidding me" response, and the application of Mr Hammer, Mr Chisel, and a load of cement to close up the gap.

Back in the closet there was still a slight draft that I traced, and the cement to seal that up is slowly hardening. It might take a little longer in these temperatures, but we'll get there.

At the hardware store I bought a length of fiber rope and a cigarette lighter. Lighting the end of the rope and letting it smolder helps find drafts - if the smoke does much other than rise straight up I know there's still a problem, and can move the end of the rope around to try and trace where the problem is. At present there's still something of a downdraft, but that's because I had to move a piece of fiberglass to do my cementing work and the draft is coming through the gap it left. Once the cement is dry I'll put the fiberglass back into place and hopefully that will seal everything up.

I also put tape around the windows in that other room. When we had windows replaced the guy who fitted them moved them from another room and assured me they would fit. And they do, kind of. They wobble side to side, to the point you can see an air gap between the window and the frame. I might as well have hired a monkey to fit my windows - the guy who did the work seems to have cut every corner he could possibly have cut, so I'm getting more and more unimpressed with him. Of course most people don't tear their house apart after having new windows fitted, so his average customer will probably never know what a hack job he does. Applying tape to the windows makes a remarkable difference. Now I just need to see how much difference - I'm going to run the heater and get the room up to temperature and see how well it holds.

Wondering if Fedex are actually going to deliver my parcel today. Yesterday nobody could explain why the web site said "scheduled for delivery Thursday" when it clearly wasn't going to arrive. But everybody apologised for the inconvenience.

I have my last appointment for the week in about an hour and a half and then the office will probably be closed Monday due to snow and bad road conditions. I doubt if school will be open until at least Wednesday next week

Got insulation panels in the back of the closet, and fiberglass stuffed into the spaces where the gap between wall studs goes behind interior stud walls. Shelves put back. Stuff put back on shelves. I trimmed the ends off the shelves because they were incredibly snug before, and now they go in more easily. I used the nail gun to hold them down rather than driving new nails into the walls. There's still a draft somewhere in the very corner of my study, and I think it's coming in from behind one of the wall studs, which means it's all but impossible to properly seal it. If I can find just where it is I can spray foam into the space to block it, even if I can't address it as thoroughly as I would like.

The closet already feels much warmer. Once I can nail the last draft hopefully my study will be significantly warmer too. It's already a lot better, there's still this one persistent draft that's like a fly in the ointment. But sooner or later I'll nail it. The local hardware store has a 10% off sale next week so I'm going to stock up on sealant.

Well the good news is that I found my elusive draft. The bad news is that I'm not sure how to get at it to perform a long-term seal of it. So far I've stuffed fiberglass into it which is kinda holding but I really need to figure a way to get something more permanent in there. It's where a beam goes into the wall but it's surrounded on almost all sides by other things. And for good measure, where the house was extended there's a second beam nailed to it, which means the draft can get between the two beams unless I stop that. The gap between the beams is small, making it hard to seal it up fully. What I might end up doing is drilling a small hole through the middle so I can spray something in there to seal it all up for keeps. Then if I can get my sealant gun in there I'll blast the whole area with lots of sealant. Hopefully that will nail the problem.

While I was at it I found a couple more drafts (from behind wall studs, just to make life interesting) and pressed fiberglass into the space to close them up pending a more permanent fix. In the space of 15 minutes the temperature rose 3 degrees, with no heating on. I'm still not 100% sure I've got them all, but I was getting tired of the smell of smoldering rope.

It's properly cold outside today. The unheated space has finally given up another two degrees, dropping to 46. I'm pleased that it's taken so long of sub-freezing temperatures to do that, but it still needs to be warmed up again, even if only a few degrees. I'm going to get another electric space heater to leave over there, something I can use to just hold the temperature in the low 50s so I don't have to worry about pipes freezing and stuff.

I would use the heater from the study but I kinda need that to keep the study at a workable temperature.

I barely made it on time for mass this morning, arrived at 9:28 for a 9:30 mass. But after mass there was lunch with friends at a local pub. That was nice.
