Do any of you wear jewelry? I don't wear much but have a favorite ring that is my birthstone. It's opal.

I don't wear a lot of jewelry. In the summertime a lot of the time I don't even wear my wedding ring because it gets too tight in the heat. I have a few rings that I don't wear a whole lot, and a collection of watches that I only sometimes wear.

I only wear my wedding ring set right now. I used to wear a cross and my Bethel bible study pendant around my neck but after my surgeries I'm sensitive to anything there.

A new battery should be an easy thing to get?

I have one watch that I wear regularly. I did have a plastic sports watch that I wore hiking but one of the seals on it failed and the last time I went hiking in the rain some water got inside it. I'm still trying to figure out how I might get the moisture out to see if I can get it going again. I really liked that watch. I've got a couple of other watches I picked up over the years that need minor things done. I've got a Citizen that I bought back in 1995 that needs a spring bar in the strap, a Rotary I picked up remarkably cheaply that really needs a new strap, and an assortment of other watches I picked up in job lots that need combinations of adjustments and batteries. At some point I need to get around to putting fresh batteries in a load of them and posting pictures online to sell them. And then there are the watches in a bad state of disrepair that aren't useful as anything other than being parts donors. I had two watches that were more or less identical - one worked but the body was pretty bashed up and the other had a nice body but didn't work, so I swapped out the parts so I had one that looked nice and worked, and one that was bashed up and didn't work.

I have a necklace that I never wear. I'm not really a necklace person, but this one is really rather nice. My parents bought it for me when I was a child and didn't even let me have it until I turned 18. It's 18 carat gold with a gold lion on it. At current gold prices it's probably worth the fat end of $2000, which is another reason not to wear it given most of the time just lately I end up getting myself covered in crud.

For those who wear jewelry, do you feel safe when out around other people? What I mean is there are thefts (at least where I used to live) so do you feel safe you won't get mugged?

I've never been overly worried about it but then I'm about 6'5 and 270lb. For a time there was a spate of thefts around London where thieves would target expensive cars at traffic lights. I think in some cases they just smashed the window and grabbed watches from peoples' wrists. They were targeting things like Rolex, Cartier, Breitling etc, I doubt they would bother with that kind of stunt to get my Tissot or Rotary.

Yes, I can get a new battery for about $10. I'm just trying to figure out where to get it. The last one I got was at a jeweler but the driveway there is too steep for my car now. Have to find another place.

Good idea to sell some of yours.

Yes, I feel safe to wear my jewelry. I live in a good area now. I would only be scared if I went somewhere not safe which I rarely do these days.

Try Walmart! That's where I got a battery for my old watch but it was like 10 years ago.

I'd hope you could get a battery fitted for less than $10, unless your watch is something quite special. Watch batteries are pretty cheap, you can often get four of them for $1 at the dollar store.

Thanks for that suggestion. Walmart here is kind of far.

I don't know how to put them in the watch, though.

I don't know how to put them in the watch, though.

Usually if you can get the back of the watch it's pretty simple. The watch will either need a case knife or a Jaxa tool. If it has six little lugs on the back it twists off; if it doesn't it will probably have a slight lip somewhere on it which means you need a case knife.

If you only have the one watch the chances are it's not worth getting the tools to change the batteries yourself, but there's really no need for it to cost much to put a new battery in. I can usually do it within literally a minute or two. The only problem is that some watches then need a specific electrical connection to be made for them to register the new battery, so you end up poking around with metal tweezers to make the connection so they start running again.

I have loads of gold jewelry that my daughter and hubby brought me but I hardly ever wear it now. My wedding ring and engagement ring sit in it's boxes as they are now massively to small .. I prefer to wear silver or white gold now and wear it all the time rings and bracelets and necklaces.. they just look better I think..
