OK. Jesus said he was the bread of life. What does that mean? When we speak of spiritual things, we speak equivocally, not univocally. We use the words that best describes what we speak of. So he wasn't saying that he was bread, made from flour. The simplest equivocal meaning was bread as the principle method by which we nourish our bodies. So he was speaking of himself as a source of nourishment. Now, he said he was the bread of life. Here is the context: Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33"For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world." 34Then they said to Him, "Lord, always give us this bread."… In this Jesus is lifting this up above physical nourishment. the Life he speaks of is something greater than mere physical existence. So, Jesus is the source and nourishment of our spiritual and eternal life.
