Maybe, maybe not; AA is sometimes part of the medical treatment of the condition.

It must be unique in that doctors want people to believe in "higher powers" to get cured.

If Alcoholism is a medical condition, it should be treated medically. I can't think of any other conditions where a trained medical professional would tell their patients to go to a meeting with other sick people, and part of that process might involve creating an idol to help them with their problem.

Almost every psychiatric condition is treated with medical and verbal approaches. Group therapy is common. AA is one form of group therapy.

My issue is not with group therapy. It's with creating an idol.

Step 2:

“Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”

Nowhere do they say that this Power is Christ. I've heard everything from, "don't worry about, just believe in sonething" to "a doorknob could be your higher power".

I see, is that what idolatry is?

What I find interesting is how many millions have been helped by this organization and how many have come to Christ because of this that it is being attacked. Have you ever stopped to think that people caught in the throes of alcohol usually dont believe in anything but the bottle and many have come to the end of themselves and to believe in anything is a stretch so if it helps get them sober and in their right mind where they can be receptive to Christ then I say well done. It is time that these attacks on whatever subject comes up is done away with. Personally I dont like confrontation and I suspect that others dont either so maybe if we want this site to grow we should perhaps dial it back a bit.
