I was told that when a man and woman married they would be married forever in the eyes of the church and God until death. Divorce was allowed only in cases were adultery has occurred.

There are also other circumstances such as physical abuse where seperation makes a lot of sense

That's what Matthew 5:31-32 says
31 “It was said, ‘Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her a certificate of divorce’; 32 but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery."
