I can see myself taking the rear in a march where I am trying to protect my family. I would urge them onward rather than leave them behind me.
That's just how I would process the situation. Sort of shield myself between the disaster and my family. But, we are given no information regarding where each person was located on the trail.

I think I was thinking of more modern times...doesn't the middle eastern man lead the way and the woman has to follow? I've done exactly what I hate...relying on modern thinking to form a picture!
