What brand so I don't buy one!! :D

It's a DeWalt. Usually they seem to be very good but even the best brands produce an occasional dud. It's under warranty so shouldn't cost me anything for repair.

I think all my power tools are DeWalt. So far I've been very pleased with them, with the obvious exception of the table saw developing a fault that I think is in the motor.

Lots of fun with the house today.

I cut a small part of one of the studs away so I could get an old window weight out. Then packed a little more fiberglass into the space where the weight used to be.

Got a bunch of gaps in the wall filled with mortar, including an interesting one that meant I had to apply the mortar left-handed in a space I couldn't see into. It took a little doing but applying it a small amount at a time did what I needed it to do. Now I'm waiting for it to fully dry out so I can put a little more over the top of some of the bigger gaps. Looking at the wall with the thermal camera it looks so much better now, although where the mortar is drying there are a few very local spots that appear cold.

I also managed to trace a cable that had been puzzling me for a while. Sadly I couldn't pull it out because it appears to be secured somewhere inside a wall I'm not ready to pull down just yet. Along the way I determined that the wall I thought was made of brick is actually made of drywall, which means the wall I was hoping to be drywall is probably the structural brick wall. That's annoying, because it's the wall I want to tear down and if it's structural that means I'm going to have to pay someone to do the work.

I also figured the best way to remove the frustrating nails was to use my oscillating tool to simply cut through them. It worked, it caused a little smoke as everything got warm and it was all the blade could cope with (it now has a little patch in the middle where the teeth are worn away). I think when I do the other side I need to let everything cool down more before pushing on regardless.... and I probably need to buy a new blade. Perhaps I'll keep a tally of how many tools, blades etc I trash in the course of my overall project - I think this is the first blade that's gone from new to badly worn so far.

I'm hoping I get a reasonably sunny day before it gets properly cold and wet, so I can fix up some of the dodgy mortar in the outside face of the wall. It's surprising just how many little gaps and cracks there are. When it's warmer I may look to completly replace the faces of some of the concrete blocks, but for now a quick patch job will have to do.

Today's thermal image of the outside wall was pleasing - the color is much more uniform, suggesting my patchwork on the inside is making a difference. Today's job is to go over the large gap I filled yesterday and put another layer of mortar in, bringing it more or less level with the rest of the wall. The front wall has some gaps in it, only noticeable when the wind blows. From the inside I'm struggling to see them, and they aren't showing up on my thermal image, so I'll have to study the outside and most likely touch up some mortar joints.

There's also another patch that is showing up much brighter on thermal images, which most likely means I've got more gaps to fill. Then I can move to a wall upstairs that currently features a lot of building foam and fiberglass, and fill some much larger gaps on the inner face of the wall. Thankfully I found a web site that shows how to repair concrete blocks - although this wall was built the way it is (no idea why, I guess that's how they did it back then) the principles should still work and I just need a supply of concrete block faces. My next door neighbor has a bunch of them in his yard that I think he plans to dump, and if so we can save each other some money because I can take them away for him. I save the cost of buying blocks and he saves the cost of dumping a pile of broken blocks he doesn't need. All I plan to do with them is cut them up and salvage parts of them, so the fact they are broken doesn't matter.

It turned out the problem with my table saw wasn't with the saw at all, it looks like one of my older breaker switches has developed a fault. The hardware store tested it and couldn't get it to show the problem I'd been having. So I took it home and the first thing it did was blow a breaker. So I put it in another socket, on another circuit, and it worked fine (curiously, a socket that it wouldn't work in yesterday). Next step... go find me a new breaker switch and swap the old one out.

The thing has an initial surge current of about 18 amps, so perhaps my 20A breaker is just a little borderline and prone to pop a little too enthusiastically.

Recording an album actually lol I'm constantly writing and I finally upgraded my recording gear but have never had time to really mess with it, a little, but I plan on going on a recording binge and really hoping inspiration hits well in the process. That and of course visiting relatives and exchanging gifts on Christmas.

Got a couple of brush strips to put on the bottom of a couple of my exterior doors. Should be a simple project (I say "should be" because experience says very little in my house is actually simple), and hopefully will save me on my heating bills. The other day I put some adhesive foam strip under one of my doors as a stopgap measure, having seem a dark blue stripe under it on my thermal camera. Now I've got the brush strips I can put a more permanent solution in place.

I got two of them because I noticed a cold patch under another one of my external doors. There are a few of them in my house...

Having a go at putting raw corn (dry, not flash frozen) through the Nixtamalization process to make it more bio-available. Most of the stuff I could find on the internet required buying lime to make lime water to make the soak solution more alkaline. Eh. Why not sodium bicarb or something else? Wikipedia said "wood ash" was also used. Ok, don't have any wood around to burn. Perhaps some newspaper will do.

Tested my tap water for ph reading with a ph kit I have.
Burned some newspaper, added ashes to water.
Tested ash water. It's more alkaline with the ashes in it.

Enough to Nixtamalize dry raw corn? I guess I'll have my answer tomorrow after letting it soak.

Detroit Lions football. Wishing I was back in Michigan for service tonight, but I'll make do here. I really miss the church there, but didn't really appreciate them until they're not around.

Just made a minor tweak to one of my storm doors. I was aware it didn't seem to seat very well in its frame, and it turned out that whatever ape installed it didn't align it properly so it was scraping the top of the door frame. The top of the frame wasn't even a natural top, someone had added some trim to presumably seal a gap and done a really bad job of it. Since there was little scope to shunt the thing upwards a fraction I took it off, cut a piece of wood from an offcut, and used that to seal the (small) gap it left.

Sadly the only offcut I had that I could use was a piece of hard maple. I'd forgotten I had that strip of maple lying around, but soon realised because it's just a little bit harder to work with than pine....

Now the door closes properly first time every time, the gap is sealed, and hopefully now my enclosed porch will stay just a little warmer during the winter. It's not too much of an issue, but the colder it gets the colder my house is likely to get, being joined on and all that.

I would put the brush strips at the bottom of my doors but that would mean getting changed so I don't get these clothes dirty and then getting changed back before church tonight. I don't feel like fussing, so I'll most likely spend a stressful afternoon in my recliner.

Home from Christmas Eve service. Very nice toward the end with candles lit, and piano doing the run-through of "Silent Night" before the verse, a lady in front of me began to sing in German! No-one interrupted
