For those who have trick-or-treating in your areas, do you hand out candy alternatives? Stickers, balloons, coins? When you were a kid and went trick-or-treating, how did you feel when you received those things in your bag?

Eek!

No, I do not hand out sweets, I would not want children to collect sweets from strangers :)

Did you ever go trick-or-treating as a child? We started off going to only the neighbors we knew when we were younger. As a teen we hit as many houses as we could before going to Halloween parties afterward.

We don't do that. Once as a kid I went w a friend to the door of her neighbour. She said the woman gave candy if you plucked flowers for her. I never got much candy. This was terrific. The bunches of flowers got uglier and tinier and all the time we brought em til the woman was sick and tired of it and let her dog at us LOL.

There are some migrants (mostly from the USA it seems) that celebrate Halloween here, and on that evening small groups can be seen walking around some neighborhoods. It's not the norm though.

I don't keep anything for the kids because no one comes to my door. It's not well lit - and people have to travel a fair way through a lot of darkness just to get to it. To date - no one has bothered.

Plus there's that sign that announces you're that Strav guy from the internet so the parents won't bring the kiddos near ;) j/k Sorry, I'm still in recovery so my brain is a bit off. :D You can handle my sense of humor though.

The tradition is CANDY...... kids (and their parents) want CANDY..... Now, maybe if you have them a dollar instead, THAT might we welcomed. They could be given apples but all of them would be thrown away.

I read about this dentist who gave away toothbrushes. They TP'ed his house.

There was a preacher guy across the street that use to give out evangelistic tracks for Halloween. I always hated going to his house. He never had anything good. We give out candy at my house.

Hmm. Lam, I had you pictured in a rural or semi rural area where you wouldn't have this dilemma.

When I was kid growing up in the USA I went trick-or-treating as well. That being said - I thought about it and even if I lived there today in an area where kids are likely to come around (such as a suburban neighborhood), I wouldn't hand out candy. I'd be game to make something sweet tasting and nutritious - but most people automatically reject things like this because of horror stories of poisons, razor blades etc. So the whole holiday and trick-or-treating pretty much means buying/giving out industrial/prepackaged commercial candy for the kids.

I couldn't do this. Instead, I'd put the car(s) into the garage or otherwise out of sight and turn off all the lights (including porch light) on Halloween. Kids (and parents) see a dark house and they are more reluctant to approach. They are also more likely to assume no one is home.

Every year we have parents who drive their kids to our neighborhood. It is easy for them because the houses are fairly close to each other. I'm sure we have over 100 every year. Then there are those who think the holiday is Satanic and turn out their lights and don't participate in it at all.

Not anymore as we very rarely get any kids down here now.. Plus I don't see the point in trying to teach children not to talk to strangers and then they get sent out to do just that.. hmmm makes no sense to me.. but what do I know ..lol
