I have some flowers elsewhere in the yard but that's a good idea to have something for the table!

so are you wanting a vegetable gardene, or a flower garden?

Here's a great resource: https://www.youtube.com/user/MIgardener

In our area the city offers free compost and will even load it or deliver it for a small fee.

Most farms are looking for people who will take manure. Horse boarding facilities too, many times they will have equipment to load it and are happy to :•)

I've also learned that table scraps will compost in about the same time without being turned. We keep a bucket outside the kitchen door and fill it with coffee grounds/filters, egg shells, banana peels, corn cobs... then take it to a pile in the tree line. Each year start a new pile and use the old pile, easy if you have a spot. (animals never bother it as long as we stick to fruits, veggies, eggshells, and coffee grounds)

...and only plant what you like and what you'll use. One year I planted 50 tomato plants, that was overwhelming, lol.

We live near a lot of farms and that's a great idea to ask them :)

My mom always planted way too many tomatoes as well. Did you ever do any canning?

I'd like to stick with vegetables. What's your expertise?

Yeah, everything from chicken and fish to fruits and veggies. I learned that it's not necessary to skin and seed the tomatoes when making salsa. Just chop the tomatoes up and throw 'em in the pot with onions and peppers and anything else you want boil 'em for 15 minutes and ladle it into clean jars...I don't bother putting them in a water bath, always works well.

Did your mom can, do you?

My mom never canned anything. We just had a lot of food to eat and I think sometimes she gave stuff to the neighbors who didn't have gardens. So many people grew their own gardens when I was growing up!

I've never canned and don't know how. I like tomato sauces but now with my tongue issues I probably will have to avoid those because of the acidity.

I have used 1/4 of the space of my full garden area. We've had so much rain lately that some of my plants are completely ruined. The beans are gone. The tomato plants are yellow and withered and might not recover. The zucchini is making a comeback. The cucumbers are hanging in there but could go either way. The herbs are fine. The onions are sparse. The carrots are still good. The broccoli probably won't make it.

:( My poor garden!

unfortunately to much rain is as bad as not enough. This late in the season you might want to try container garden as plants now are half off and if you can find them almost grown you would still have time to get some tomatoes at least. I have two plants on my back porch and they are prolific, planted in a five gallon bucket

It would cost too much to get the containers and soil. We already put too much money into the fencing around the portion we have now and won't recoup any of the cost through produce this year. I'll have to rethink how I plant things for next year. Certain parts of the garden are in the path of water flow down the hill and unless I entirely move the garden (which I refuse to do) then I have to change where I plant things. Which vegetables love water the most?

My tomatoes are yellow and withered and do not like too much water. The zucchini were looking bad for a while but they're pulling through now.

Thanks. I've worked so hard and this is the first garden I've had at this house since we moved here almost 5 years ago. It's disheartening. At least the groundhogs get all the ruined produce :D

This year the neighbor's cottonwood trees are polluting the area so bad that neither my husband nor myself can be outside for very long to do yard work (allergies)...and that includes preparing my garden this year. :(

I have 2 pot containers that I planted Basil, Cilantro and Spinach and hopefully once the cottonwood dies down I'll be able to do something with the garden to get some zucchini, cucumbers and pumpkins planted. I don't think I'll put up the fencing around the garden this time though and just chance it with the deer and the ground hogs.
