I sometimes feel like as a believer I shouldn't be spending my time reading things like mystery novels or spy thriller type books. I think to myself that I should be reading my Bible or a book about spiritual topics. I feel the same sometimes when I watch a movei. Maybe that's why I don't watch many of them. Can anyone relate to that feeling? I've read about 22 books this year so far about half of which have been secular.

Just because one is a Christian, it doesn't remove one from being able to enjoy secular things. A well-written tale can be quite entertaining. And when it comes right down to it, much of the stuff in the Bible isn't all that spiritual anyway. It's only human beings who have elevated to being the "Word of God" what was merely secular Israelite history and/or propaganda when it was written.

And much of what is passed off as spiritual writing today is so mind-numbingly boring and trite that it would probably be better for one's mind to read something secular.

That said, you've already read approximately 11 so-called spiritual books this year; I hardly think you're lacking in that genre. Just sayin'. ;)

I think it's easy as a Christian to feel guilty enjoying the mundane things. We wonder if God approves. But God has given people vocations such as writers, actors, etc...and it's okay to read books that don't have to do with the bible and be entertained by movies and tv. As long as we're not totally neglecting His Word we're fine :)

I so agree that they can be mind numbingly boring. I am reading a christian fiction book right now that my parents gave me. Kinda a Indiana Jones that is also a christian type person is the main character. My parents really liked it, but so far I just find it boring

You read books because you like it???
Guess you were never forced to read em. I hate it ever since high school. Only thing I can read is the Bible and a few really good simply written christian books. Smith Wigglesworth only read the Bible. Someone dared come in his house w a newspaper. He told him to get it out of his house.

I enjoy reading, although I just won't have a lot of time for it anymore. I rarely read Christian literature (except for the Bible, lol) and when I do it's likely to be a dogmatics book. The last book I read that is kinda Christian was Silence (an excellent book, btw).

That was mean of him. I hope it was not raining! His guest would get wet if it was raining.

Yeah, I think Jesus eluded to this when he said, why do the scribes think that a Son of David will be the Messiah? (Mk 12:35, Mt 22:42, Lk 20:41)

Had they not read what David did? ( Matthew 12:3, Mark 2:25, Luke 6:3 ) 1 Samuel 20-22

...and as for the propaganda, we should probably read between the lines because No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. (1Samuel 24:4, 26:12, Mt 12:29, Mk 3:27, Lk 11:21, 2̶2̶) lol.

1/2 secular 1/2 spiritual seems well rounded
